Wilkes i of Washington, have learned from, him that he is now in Port au Prince, Haiti, in the West Indies,* conducting an examination of the National Bank, of Haiti. Mr. Wilkes and his staff of examiners were loaned by the Federal Reserve Board to the Re public of Haiti for this purpose. The National Bank acts as fiscal ggent for the go-vernmfent in handling the government debt, ’issues the paper money whose units are called “gourdes,” and conducts a commer cial banking business.
