CONGRESS HEARS PRIME MINISTER AT KING’S — OF COURSE B. L King Son The Ladies Shop’ British Diplomat Declares War Be tween United States and Britain Impossible If Both Keep Pact. Washington, Oct. 7.—Prime Minis ter Ramsay MacDonald interrupted ■his conferences with President Hoov- ;er today to tell the congress of the ' United States that there could be no war between the two great English- speaking nations if each did its duty in making effective the Kellogg-Briand treaty renouncing war. “There can be no war,” the British {statesman said. “Nay, more; it is ab- ^soluli^ly impossible, if you and we do j our duty in making the peace pact ef fective, that any section of our arms, j whether land, or sea, or air, can never again come into hostile conflict.” j The senate chamber was crowded with legislators, diplomats and citizen spectators. Asserting amid applause that the problems of jealousy and of fear have disappeared, the prime minister de clared the American and British gov ernments have met together and have ;said: “W’hat is all this bother about , parity?” j “Parity?” he questioned sharply, j “Take it!” he exclaimed, “—without , reserve, heaped up and flowing over. That is one of the results of this vis it. Another result of the visit is that we have come to understand each oth er.” j “Ah, senators!” the prime minister continued, “as long as you conduct your negotiations by correspondence over thousands of miles of sea, you , will never understand each other at all. In these democratic days, when heart speaks to heart as deep speaks j to deep and silence talks to silence, personality, personal contact, exchange ■ of views by the lip, sitting at two sides of a fireplace, as it was my great ' privilege to do this week-end with ycur president, these things are to be jas important as anything else in lay- I ing the foundation of an’ enduring I peace all over the world.” J Before the visiting statesman spoke -COAL- CROWN BLOCK AND EGG .
