The Progressive Farmer has the following advice for farmers as to going in debt for their supplies: Think of debt as you would of a pestilence, and most of all avoid "time prices." If you must go into debt try to borrow money at 6 to 8 per cent, put it in a bank and pay the actual cold cash for what you need. Bitter pay at the rate of 10 per cent, a year in interest than at the rate or 30 to 70 per ct^t. a year in time prices. And il there is anything else quite as bad for keeping you in debt as time prices, it is usually the prices asked by traveling agents. The slick-tongued agent has made millions of us pay two prices for things we didn't half need. It's a safe rule to never buy anything from an agent till you have had a week to think it over. Notice?Keep Out! In a town in Alabama a boy, unable to swim, was struggling in 4he water. On the bank, rushing around and telling each other what to do, were thirty big husky men, several of whom could swim. Y\ bile they wen niHHlirnr Mini mil torinir llwi lim j-fv/viv. 1 L'v,> sank. Not oven then did one of the "men" plunge in tho water and try to rescue the little fellow. He drowned before their very eyes. Later, when questioned by other astonished citizens the brave fellows explained that they had on their Sunday clothes, did not wish to get them soiled and that there was not time for any , of them to undress and pull the drowning lad out of the pond. A wave of righteous indignation has swept over the town and these Sunday suit fellows boycotted and cut dead, socially, are j preparing to leave the place. ! This article is written for the purpose of suggesting, should it meet the eye of one of the thirty, that we do not want any j of his kind in our community. ! -Ex. "God Bless You." Unless their followers fool-j hardily force them apart, and widen their breach. President Wilson and Mr. Bryan will frive to the world a beautiful example of a political disagreement he- 1 tween warm friends without either harshness or bitterness of thought Their farewell in the White House, when each clasped the < hand of the other, and requestod I for him the blessings of God, is a wonderful spectacle in the | eyes of theto* fellowmen. None but friends leave each other in this manner and because of their deep friendship their parting becomes sadder still. Times and Democrat. | Lemberp Falls. Lemberg, the capital of Galicia, fell before the AustroGerman forces Wednesday, after a siege which began early last month. In accomplishing this victory the losses of the attacking force are said to have run high into the thousands. Must Register Forthwith. Under the Harrison antinarcotic law, all physicians, dentists, veterinarians, hospitals and retail, wholesale and manufacturing druggists are rei quired to pay to the collector of j internal revenue a special tax of $1 for the fiscal year begin-1 nine .Tulv 1 and andincr .Tnnp SO 1S16. The response in South I Carolina, with ten days left for filing applications, shows that only 617 applications for the tax with the necessary remittance of $1 have been correctly executed out of the 2,311 persons and institutions on the registration hooks in the office of the internal revenue collector, D. C. ! Hey ward. ? The State, Monday. Thaw Again Faces Jury. Harry K. Thaw's seventh attempt to gain his freedom since his arrest nine years ago for the murder of Stanford White was begun in New York yesterday with the selection of a jury to inquire as to his sanity. If the jurors decide in Thaw's favor and Justice Hendrick, presiding, who has the power to reverse their verdict, accepts it. Thaw will obtain permanent release from the Matteawan insane j asylum. Thaw has about 50 witnesses, including a number of alienists, to prove that he is now sane and [entitled to his freedom. The | State has a large number to testify against him. Good Lunches For Passengers. The Southern railway is dis| tributing a folder, announcing j plans of a system to serve fresh and palatable lunches on trains without dining car accommodaI tions. At all points where the trains are accustomed to stop for meals or during meal hours, neat boxes of lunch will be put on sale. The Southern is protri/)ir\cr t L n l\/w<\n ^ 1- A ? 1 ? viuiiik mc UUAW ncc IU nuieis, innkeepers and restaurants. Amounts to be charged will be left to the discretion of the dealers, but suggestions are made as io the quality of lunches to bepffered. Officials are emphasizing that the food shall he prepared the day it is offered. As i matter of convenience, con luctors wilj telegraph ahead for the number of lunches required upon the arrival of his train. The folder also contains informa nation as to what the contents >f the lunch should be. Farmers Seek Market. For several years past a number of the more progressive farmers in this community have been gettigg away from cotton ard devoting their lands and their energies to more diversified crops from which they expect to gain more profit and satisfaction than from the growing of cotton. However, they did not expect that their efforts would be so successful and the crops so abundant that they might have some trouble in marketing their surplus and hence have done little toward securing markets in advance. In consequence they find their fields and barns j filled with the choicest alfalfa and crimson clover hay, while there will also be a surplus of r>ats. Of course there are plenty of people throughout the State who want these farm products just as badly as the farmers here want to sell them and it only remains for them to get together. The efforts being made by E. J. Watson, commissioner of agriculture, toward this end will probably be productive of good results to both buyer and seller. The Movies. In a town lik this, where there is no society, no social mingling of the people except at church and lodge, and where a party of grown-ups is an affair to cause weeks of talk, the moving picture show serves a very useful purpose. It entertains, instructs, takes , us away from our little affairs, j?jvcs us a glimpse of other scenes and other modes of living, and serves to while away an evening without providing a bitter after-taste.? Fountain Inn Tribute. The News of Gold Hill. Times Correspondence. The condition of Sam'l Ftovd'te not improved at this writing. His neighbors gathered at his home the other day and plowed over his crop again. The little child of Dave Gibson is no better. This is a pitiful and distressing case. Children's Day will be observed at Philadelphia church on Sunday, July the 4th. Vegetables, such as beans, potatoes and cabbage are quite plentiful now, and for the information of the public, will say that our carrier says cabbage are much hetter eating if you will cook a chunk of "old ned" along with them. The fruit crop is quite short, but blackberries are getting ripe and an old gentleman who has passed away a long time since used to say that he never saw a fat Coltharp only in blackberry time. v Mr. J. 1 . Kimhrell camp nlnno yesterday in his new Ford car and took us over to Yorkville, which was truly a pleasant outing lor us. The crops on our route are quite small and grassy and the most of it seemed to have the draw-ups. The new court house is a fine building and we will be ready for another ride most any time } < i may come along. Splinter. Gold Hill, June 23. FOR SALE Several nice, fresh Milk Cows. L. A.
