Britt Reports Many PlmtU BUrted by Red Spider?-Dry Weather Favorable to This Pest. The Robesonian: Mr. O. M. Britt who operates several farms, reports that the red spider is playing havoc in some cot ton ileitis. Whenever this pest gets in its work the cotton looks like it has been blasted by lightning, and Mr. Britt says he has found no way to stop its- ravages. He has noticed its deadly work in fields in Howellsvllle, St. Pauls and Lumberton township. The red spiders camp on the uq^ der side of leaves, thousands of them to the leaf, and they are so small that they are hard to see with the naked eye. In a news item in the Charlotte Observer one day last week it was . stated that the red spider is doing considerable damage to cotton in Mecklenburg county. Mr. Charles E. Miller, Mecklenburg's farm demonstrator, says that dry weather is unfavorable to this pest and wet weather unfavorable to it. The Observer item quotes Mr. Miller further as follows: "As a prevention Mr. Miller recommends that all poke weed, jinson weed, cockleburs, blackberry vines and Jerusalem oak be destroyed. Clover and beans near the cotton also harbor this insect, he said. "As *a means of controlling the spread of the red spider, Mr. Milller R? LH nil ?hA(1iHnn loavaa b)iaiiM 1u> pulled from the cotton stalks, saturated with kerosene oil and burned. Stalks In the row on both sides of the infected spot should be pulled to prevent a spread. The cotton should be sprayed with ready made lime and sulphus. One gallon of this solution should be mixed with 50 gallons of water." I Mr. Britt says this pest was noticed in some sections of Robeson some 8 years ago. He understands from men who have had experience with it that the red spider does not follow ktsclf and spnead from year to year, as the boll weevil does, but it is exceedingly destructive when it strikes. o NOTICE.
