WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1919 . . . r . . . * ; ROADS MEETING / If Lexington County is to get anywhere next year with a road building plan which will afford anything- like satisfaction there mil have to be a . /# .? * iff*? > T. : ? f greater..unanimity than was manifest at the n; feting Monday;' fame good: IT- ideas were advanced, but there was., jaitictilarly'^afihofe th'e 'delegation' members, a divergence of opinion7 Which dbes^hot^byde welt fc^r even a start at-a workable progmth. The av. txrorttc -roads and most of ! I . W lgc >? them ar^W&iing to pay something for t&esn. Tfety ate net pari&fclajfly^tcrv eeted by what plan they get roads, so long as they iet them at'lnbt too great a cost. .The: great difficulty is that be: cause there has v not been . a system _ * adequate to keep up the roads which the county once had, dnd because of . the unusually unfavorable weather conditions, etffery section of the county to crying out at once, consequently it jwil} be; hard to- reconcile many to, a measure which fails to reabh out into the remote; sections and givp in> mediate relief. : This is the problem which ' the legislative delegation has to work out if it {p.cn be done. It will require their best thought and the laying aside of every feeling except a sincere desire to serve the best interests of the whole people. Wb have confidence that the members of the delegation * will rise to the occasion and when they meet in Columbia, will work, out some pian that will give a start towards good roads. Col. Wingard was right when he said that we might as well trim our sails io dovetail whatever plan we adopted into a statewide system, because there iissbfrie {probability that the coming legislature will adopt some measure providing for stich a -system. Lexington county will have only a very short mileage in any State system, perhaps not more than 50, while in the eveilt of a tax being levied it will have to;bear its part We wohld get little and probably pay;much for such a system, but it is likely to be adopted just the .same. If passed in the shape which many believe it will be it will relieve Lexington county ov caring for the Piedmont Highway and for the National highway, the tWo roads oh which ibere is the greatest amount of travel and which necessarily require the most work. This will afford ^opportunity for work on the latteral- roads' leading to these main highways, .but if Ijke Stale should levy a coMiddrhbjlie; jt&x ior this purpose the couhtv funds would hardly be sufficiently inqr$ase<| to give the people living away fto*n these roads what triey want. '"."It was a pity that such a small crowd was.in attendance and that Senator Ridgell did not have an opjprtunity to set out the program which he had outlined, because it ought to at least furnish a good worktag basis flbm which the delegation could start toj frame- a law which would give us- better results. THE BAPTIST DRIVE. . . It would have been a noteworthy iohievefiient if in more than twice the time allotted, the success of the Bapjtiet drive for seventy-five million dollars had Jstacbess: ' That the V v ' ' V subscription was practically raised in one dayv rojoff than remarkable. It is hardly short of marvelous. It bespeaks a ;church kjyalty and a religious fervor that means more than the raising- of : any , definite sum of money. It shows' an ability to pull together and stick together and a cajlacity to enthuse- whmh denotes that the church is styi enjoying its youth and the ah^oidiianying virility. Great things wil? doubtless be accomplished f^om the friiittj of this successful, cantssh for funds. One may look forward ta t*.' greai^ growth x>f the Baptist faith. "Nothing succeeds like i success." ; i COLORED SCHOOL RALLY. The colored people of Lexington are preparing to buy Hr piece of ground and build a ne^* school house. They had a rally at Bethel A. M. E. church on Nov. 23. . After an able sermon by Rev. T>ort*r, pastor of St. Paul Baptist church, they succeeded in'raising the sum of $149.83. They are thanking the good people of Lexington, both white'and colored, for their liberal! contribution for the eattse of educa J?n- > j r\ 1 f ! trv+rm trr r-TT .II17DT KM'tiK i'."!i.'N .11 uiiuuxiavi.
