n xt aw . . V| ? MEMORIAL COMI ^APPEAL! To the people of South Carolina: / November 21, 1919. Various campaigns for money, a natural reaction from the high tension of war days, intense work due to transitional conditions in the economic world, and anxiety over the cost of living are among the factors which have slowed up the Memorial campaign in this State. We think it best to look these conditions squarely in the face, so that we may know what is to be overcome. On the other hand, South Carolinians have never before been so prosperous. In asking for voluntary donations amounting to four hundred thousand dollars, the Memorial Commission, created by the General Asspmhlv. is not asking for anything un reasonable. And when one stops to consider the purpose for which the campaign is being waged, the request takes on an aspect that is anything \ but unreasonable. The sons and daughters of this State, who fought and worked so well for the great cafse of democracy must never be forgotten; moreover, there must be tangible, visible evidence of*4he State's gratitude to them. The campaign will not fail, for South Carolinians have never yet, and never will be unappreciative of splendid services rendered. Because the campaign for four hundred thousand dollars, to supplement the one hundred thousand made available by the General Assembly, has been retarded, the Memorial Commission has decided to continue the time for solicitation of subscriptions up to (the convening of the next session of the General Assembly. At that time the Commission should be able to report full and complete success. The impression has prevailed th#t the proposed memorial building would, in effect, be but a college chapef on the University groujnds; Constipation. Most laxatives and cathartics afford tDmniAMn' rplipf sinrl shnnld be used only for that purpose. The proposed building would be a historic museum for * South Carolina, and its location, while f on grounds held by the University 1 trustees, would not in any way hin- 1 der its use by the general public. It 1 would not be in theory or in fact, 1 merely a part of the University, but t both in theory and fact, a State me- c morial. There also has been an effort ? <- . > to have the type 01 memorial cnangeu to^a hospital, but the soldiers, through 1 the American Legion have spoken de- * cidedly against this proposition. We appeal to the various counties c that have not yet raised their quotas c to expedite the campaign. No com- * munity can have it said that when the 'c State was seeking to perpetuate the memory of her noble sons and daughters, that it was indifferent. A permanent memorial is necessary to keep alive the facts, and to keep fresh the inspiration. Robert A. Cooper, Chairman. Richard I. Manning, Vice Chairman. Columbia, S.
