LEXINGTON DISPATCH-NEWS OFFICIAL COUNTY PAPER Published Every Wednesday By SLJGH & WALKER, Lexington, S, C. O. M-. HARMAN Associate Editor Entered at the Postoffice at Lexington, S. Address all communications to The DispatchNews, J^exington, S. C. Phone 119. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19, 1919. v s v. ;j BRIDGE NEEDED. Mr. J. W. Hook of Irrrlo sets out very pointedly in a communication in this issue of The DispatchrNews the need for better means of communication the county seat and his section of the county. The need for a bridge across the river at Hope's Ferry is apparent and, as Mr. Hook clearly shows, would not only prove a matter of convenience^ to, the Fork but would he a means of bringing! to, the court house many peopie who come seldom. The roads are not bad * ) in dry weather but the bridge is surely needed ai^d ought to be provided. : u: GOOD OFFICIALS. It was a pleasure during our rounds the past week with Treasurer Deaphart and Auditor Dent to watch these competent officials handle the crowds that came to "render unto Caesar." They were polite and accommodating and yet handled the work with such expedition that nohody went away without an opport i . r. tunity to settle up. They work Well in double harness and the county is fortunate in having two such officials. ' A OASE OF 'MANNERS" The other morning we heard a con* * - ?- ? ? ' ? ? -? - 4 A versation Detween men irum mc North on the train who were quite pronounced and offensive in their dislike of the South in general and South Carolina in particular. Just the same tbey were making a living by selling something or doing somebody in the South. Just why such gentry do hot remain where their love lies perhhaps, only the sheriff can say. Their business should be as bad as their manners. ........ ? "" ?? A TANGIJCO SIvE?N. A serious problem will confront the C9u.ntry on the first of tlio year wren the rail road s of the country are returned to their owners. There will undoubtedly bo a further raise of -rates to add to the high tiost of living. All in all government operation has net proved popular and most people will' be glad of the' change. ^ I r I But it is going to take'soihe brains, some tact on the part of the'railway operators', and some patience * on the part of the pt^Iic to get even a moderately satisfactory adjustment. - .e ?MOKE WORK NEEI>ED. The sponcr the United States is relieved of the troublesome anarchistic elements which have made so much disturbance of late the better off we will be. Opportunity was never better for both capitalist and wage earner to.do well, artd in the face of this opportunity everybody wants to produce less. A litlte more work and a little less noise would help everybody. ^For our part they can deport or shoot every I. W. W. or Anarchist. There is no room, for them or their imported doctrines in this country. Everybody can't be a profiteer, but a lot of people arc trying mighty hard. Wall paper may again be used to print newspapers on if the scarcity of white paper continues. This paper was forced practically to the wall for paper the last two weeks. At the present rate we have to do without some of our newspapers along with "sweetcnm'" for our coffee. The Rock Hill Record fears that silver coins may go out of fashion, because of the advance in the value of bullion. As most newspaper men are not accustomed to any other kind of money it will be hard on them. Don't forget the Red Cross Christmas seals. Do your 'hristmas profiteering early. ') cur idea ox mo supreme courts ticcision in the Charleston election muddle is that it was decided a "dog-fall." Which, after all is close enough. The Prince of Wales, now on a visit here, is reported to be a very democratic fellow. Maybe that accounts for the lack of enthusiasm manifested by the senate towards his reception. No matter if~the government give*, up the railroads there will still be a few things and emperors traveling incog, as Pullman conductors. j Since the coming- of the fine frosty (mornings the hog population of Lexington is doubtless decreased ,by some several. Lexington has always | been lamsous ior its unc :?,uoabt. j The -Columbia marHet when com'] pleteu will prove a great?to our grandchildren.
