Crimson clover stands at the head of all the clovers as a ivinter cover crop for most states south of the Mason and Dixon line, according to G. H. Collings, Assistant Professor of Agronomy. However, in the ex treme northern part of the South and also in the mountainous regions the stand may be greatly injured some years by cold weather. Crimson clover prefers the sandy soils of our Coastal Plain, but does well also on our clays. The crop is not expensive to seed and it has the advantage over most clovers in that it makes a good start before cold weather sets in. Early planting is preferable to late planting. The young plants should bet at least 10 weeks of growth before the first frost. From 12 to 20 pounds of seed should be planted per acre. Inoculation i snecessary as is the case with all the clovers with the l exception of bur clover. As green manuring and hay crops crimson clover is of first importance. Because of its early growth it may be turned under early in the spring. A yield of from I to 2 1-2 tons per acre of hay may be expected from the average South Carolina soils. Red clover makes the best cover crop when it is planted early and on good fertile land. Although growth is made throut the winter, its rate of growth increases as spring comes on. For this reason, if maximum results are to be secured from red clover, the planting of the following crop must be delayed. The rate of seeding should be about the same as that for crimson clover. Red clover may be used for the same purpose as crimson clover. When it is to be used as a green manuring crop, it may be plowed under either when the plants are from 3 to 4 inches in height or after the blooming period. If the crop is to be cut for hay, the cutting must not be delayed longer than the period of full bloom, for when cut ting is delayed longer than this, the plant has a tendeney to become woody and unpalatable. 0 AMERICAN CANNING SPREADS Not only will the French people profit by the lessons in home canning and drying which have been given their agricultural leaders this sum mer by canning experts of the United States Department of Agriculture, but Syrians, Egyptians, Armenians, and Algerians, as well, are to learn American food-preservation methods.
