THE MANNING TIMES. Man -in ga, M. C. S. A. NETTLES, Editor. WEDNESDAY MARCH 23, 1888. Mr. J. Harry Lesesne has mounted the editorial tripod of the Enterprise, and will hereafter do the pencil posh Pg.of tiht paper. Mr. Lesesne is a young man of sterling merit, and will be a valuable aequisition to the Eu terprise. We welcome him among the printing craft. A saloon keeper tells us that there are at leas.t fifteen men in this county. avho are doing an illicit liquor busi ness. They have U. S. licenses, and do not fear harn from the State. He says the U..S. Government connives at this illicit proceeding, by refusing to let the names of the holders of these licenses-be made kuwn. We desire to see the liquor business sup pressed, and ask for more light on this subject. Who can give it to us? Theecommittee of the Grand Jury, appoipted to examine into the county offices, -,ere in session last week, making their examinations. By re quest Mr. F. P. .Cooper, foreman of the last Gx.d Jury was present, to assist them. Mr. W. L Bars, of Williamsburg, was the expert. And that is what the people of this county do not understand. Is it possible that the Grand Jury has to go to an other county, to obtain an expert, and one, also, as far as our informa tion goes, no more of an expert than some others in this county? The people of this county would be pleased to have Foreman Carrigan ise and explain. The Next Gouncil The meeting of the citizens, called to nominate a ticket for the coming municipal election, was called to or der at 4.30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Senator Joseph F. Rhame was elected chairman, and Capt. A Levi, secre tary. Juo. S. \Vilsoa, Esq., moved that nominations be made from the floor. It was carried. ~ He then moved that the entire ticket for In pendant and Wardens be voted for at the same time. Capt. Levi moved to table. The inotion to v6te for the entire ticket at one time prevailed. The following n-bninations were made: Intendant-W. ,R. BelL Wardens-W. Scott Harvin, D. M. Bradhan., P. B. Thames, W. H. Young,-A. Levi, Dr. W. E. Brown, Theodore Harvin, R. A. Stuart. The following iiceeived the highest punber of votes, and. were declared the roniinees . . For Intendant---W. K. Bell, 55 votes. For Wardens-P. B. Thames, 56; W. S. Harvin, 54; D). M. rdham, 48; )'Theo. Harvin, (colrored,) 5 This will constitute the citizenjs ticket, and will give general satisfac A number of white persons with drew from the meeting- without vot ing, and there is some talk of nomi nating another ticket. We do not think this course. best; the meeting was called by the citizens, and the re sult should stand as final. The tick et will not ylease every body, but it is made up of good men, and we say, let it be elected unanimously. CHIEF JUSTICE WAITE. Morrison R. Waite, Chief Justice .of the'United States, died suddenly of croupous ppeumonia, at his resi dence in Washington, last Friday morning. Mr. Waite had been slight. ly indisposed for several days, but he was not considbi-ed dangeroiusly ill, and his wife and all the family except one daughter was absent. The Newv York Sera~cld says of him : "By 'the death of Chief Justice Wa te the -:country loses a man of a singularly pure and spright char acter, whose ser.vices and examnpie, as a jurist andlas a citizen, have been and will remain of the greatest value to his fellow citizens. He was an ideal Judge, for he united to great learning in the law,. clear gobod sense, great elevation of character, patient industrj and patrictic devotion to his country with a calm, unruhled judi cial spirit which made him in times of violent political excitement always an unpartisan exponent of the consti tution. "I may be said that he was not a great man,but his life was more use ful and his example more impor tant to his countrymen than those of many "great men," .so called. He spent that life im4 the UaS~uning per formance of duty ; personal or selfish ambitions had no part in his charac ter, and as the head of the highest judicial'Gibunal in this country and in the wvorld, he gave for many years dignity and elevation to its ju,dge ments, and by his upright and honor able life, no less than by his impor tant labors, earned the universal es teem of his countrymen" Clarendon's Finance Committee.
