THE M!AING TflIZ] WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15, i887. I. S. DINKINS, Editor. r The prohibition law, of Maine, has received a rude and unexpected set back by one Michel Burns, of Augusta, Me., who brought to that city from Liverpool, a large invoice of foreign distilled liquors which he is dealig A out promiscuously. Burns bases his conduct on the polity of the . ited . 'States government, which protects: all persons importing liquors frow foreign countries from prosecution',C under any State prohibitory law for selling such goods in the origin' unbroken package. The liquors, ()l sisting of Irish whiskey, and Jaia rum, reached Augusta by way of the,; Portland Custom House. They wer hauled through the streets on carts before the staiing eyes of police and citizens. Burns has his storspaked with the goods. They are piled up in. his waidows before the admiring gaze of all opoents of the proliibitory law. --ley all being retailed at low prices within easy rea:>h of the puir chasing public. Everybody is sur prised at the affair, and all the lawyers in the town have been employe t t' look up the law on the s:ue of import ed liquors in their original packages. The City of the Sand Hill1. FrLroN, June 13, 1887. *'Summer to the earth's richest wcalth given. Thou Cross of the year.' June! Beautiful, bappy June, rob ed in all thy enchanted splendor, beautified with thine own precious: jewels-"the flowers which bloom in June," and, above all, the "feast oi roses"-the beautiful and proud Qaeeri of Flowers! Who can envy the lo ely dwellers of the famed vale of CasX mere, so beautiful is ever. garden with these lovely treasures of Jun,. *hich kissed by the gentle zephyr, generously commit their fragrance to the heraldry of the air, and from the leafy'eloisters finds an accordig an swer in the birds' musical peans of praise.to the luscious odors of June time.. Why attempt "to paint the lil 1y and gild refined gold?'-for to thee thou voluptuous Queen of months cloth our orisons arise, in our coven -pardon us gentle reader, for this time attempting to mingle the pon ianeous gushings of our heart with: ie beautiful and sublime, and believe. that should we meet you again, we will be neither forgetful of our faults, nor ungrateful for your indulgence. t - The heart of the citizen of classie I Fulton, pulsates with emotions of l A dde, for verily the "bun" hath perch-; *-d on her (Fulton's) patrician ensign. and her beautiful hills and fertile aueadows will soon be traversed by ~he Manchester and Augusta Rauiroad Mr.iJ. H. Hardin, of Cheraw, has1 b awaruded the contract, wherewitha t'dhe embryo railroad builders of Futon, bloweth muchly, prayeth hardly for a job, andgetteth "left" badly. bfr. Colin C. Manning, has decided to adopt Law as his profession, and has gone to Sumter to study under ~T. F; 2. Haynsworth, Esq. The Misses Cantey, whose presence added -such charm to society in the an~?d EHl," have returned to Camn doggu~ch to the sorron of "ye' lights ot Fulton town, sir." K.John Canty, of Camden has - so reurned home, doubtless carryin' with him some very pleasant remem ' braees. Mrs. D. R. Williams is visiting' her father, Governor Manning. Why they should come~ to this conclusion, I can't conceive unless it was the remorseful pangs of a'guiltfy conscience,-a quldity ~ whih bitherto- I 'ave considered some peo ple as devoid of, as theyr are of brains. Truly "the wicked fleeth when no man pm-sueth." I have deemed cer tain belligerent gentlemnen(?) anda their. malignant statements as ui worthy of the distinction of my notice. but fr-om reent misrepresentations, I wu ld 1e *doing violence to my scnse of j- stie to others, did I permit certaiin state inents to pass unrefuted. It ha s been ssertgd by my criticisers, who hav e about as much conception of the cor rect definition of Fnglish diction, as a peckaninry on the banks <f the Congo has of the philosophy expoundQed iu the Novum organum, that my l-m . guage was designed to reflect upon, and impugn a Trial Justice anao his. a constable, and Mr. E. Geddings. -This is utterly false; these three gen-: tiemen are too highly esteemed to re- e quire any encomiunm at my Lands i The spasmo dic flutterrings of ar few badly wounded scavengers, is a matter of no consequence to me. I hope that1 I can claim with truth and becomiin ing modesty that my naume and char -acter are enthroned upon an emnec too high to be tarnished by th e cal umnious mud perpetually spewted up from the filthy depths of certa-in gn grene cesspools of eff'ete huaxnity. Whenever my expressions chanr-e to. be a successful diagnosis of nmy fellow citizens' foibles, the danmnation will rest upon themi, and not upon AR'ONAUT. Oakland Doingir.
