Plowden has filled up his space with a catalogue of prices, de fying competition. Sinclair, the Photographer, will not leave this week as epected. * The next dime reading is appointed at the residence of J. S. Wilson, Esq., on Wednesday, the 29th inst. No re freshments will be sold. Prof. W. B. Bonhani was so much ;t improved last week as to accompany I his father home. He hopes to be able to return in a short ti" c and com mence his duties at the Manning Acad- t emy. t The advertisement of Louis Loyns appears to-day. The attractions in Mr. Lovns' handsome store are truly the public "Town Talk." Seven hundred and fifty dollars in one month's time. It seems like a t big profit for one canvassing agent to I make at one time, but Mr. W. F. Hopkins, of North Carolina, who is working for the publishing house of B. F. Johnson & Co., of Richmond, Va., did it and is still going bravely ahead. This was dAone with no capi tal worth speaking of * C BnoEN ARM.-We regret to learnS that Master Chariley Lesesne, son of our Sheriff, Maj. H. H. Lesesne, had his arm quite badly fractured while playing base ball at Jordan, a ew t days since. Charley has our sympathy, and we hope him a speedy recovery. CA DMATEs SERENADED.-Te nomi- C nees for Auditor, School Commission er, and Probate Judge were serenad ed Friday evening, at the Clarendon Hotel. After the speeches the large crowd were invited to a bountiful col lation of cake and lemonade. Row AT FoiESToN-.-On the 14th ult., at Forebton, this usually quiet village was the scene of quite a spirit ed fight, just as the polls clos1: and the counting of votes bega. nves I flourished, deadiy threats cchied up on the air; and sooi the (ry was rais ed, that some one has been cut and the doctor must come. Mr. W. T. P. Sprott's store, near whiclr the combat waxed warm, was considerably injured, by haviug glass es smashed and show cases broken. Messrs. James Frierson, Theodore I Kelley, Tom Niitchum and - 3itchum were severely cut. RoLa(oIrs.-Rev. A. W. Price. oft Whiteville. N. C., preached in the Baptist Church of this place last even- tI ing. He is announced to preach again this evening.t Rev. Mr.~Millichamps, of Orange-~ burg, who has been assisting the Rev. 1 L. D. Bass in a meeting at Dudley's, ! preached here last Sunday. He is a entleman of age, experience and ,I earnest piety. His sermon w~as deliv ered with great unction and with hap-< p effect. It is announced that the Rev. F. I M. Satterwhite, of Marion. will fill thej pulpit of the Baptist Church next Sunday morning. Mnr. Cur DteBOSE 1IssING.-On Sunday last, the 12th, .SIr. C. Dui Bose left home and went, as claimed, to a neighbors for the purpose of do ing some work. Hie executed his1 design, was paid one dollar, and left. It appears that he was accompamied, on taking his departure, by two ne groes; since which time nothing has been heard of him. Mrs. DuBose, the wife of the missing man, spied the negroes, who evinced every desire to prevent being seen, and when ac costed, as she relates, manifested great halting and hesitation in ac counting for Mr. DuBose; and said, fially, he had gone to vote. Foul play is suspected, and every~ effort should be made to find theI man or his body. Since writing the above we under stand that Mr. DuBose has turned up safe and sound. Svrnr~oN, S. C., Sept. 12, 188G. To my friends of Clare- idn Ui:. Ihereby'express my grateful acknowl-~ edgments for your liberal support in the late Primary election, given in the face of rumors that were circulat ed purposely to defeat my ekcetion. Some of the rumors were known to me but I was (by my pledge madle to all the candidates for House of Representatives before the first Pri mary, and renewed to Mr. Plowden ater 1st Primary, and wvhich was mu tual on the part of each, not to can vass nor electioneer after first Prima r) as effectually prevented from goQ ing abroad to correct them as if Ihfad been chained to my door post. It is true that some of my friends, without: my instigation, tried in the eleventh hour to correct the false reports and counteract their influence; but new and absurd reports were sprung in the Salem section of the county, which had the effect to cast the alos en tire vote of that section ngainst me.: For the originators a:.i authors of: these falsehoods I have a contempt, and charge them to produce the evi-: dence to prove asingle one of them. None of the above has any reux - ence to Mr. E. Ri. Plowden. I know Mr. Plowden to be a gentleman in ev e- roeet, and one who holds his o or dearcr than his lire. g1ve him my vote in Ithe two late Primaries and will take grcat pleas ire in supporting him in the future. [ congratulate the Democracy of jlarendon, that they will have one in .lie ilouse of Representatives who aas a proper regard for his word of ionor. JNo. C. In . SUMMERTON SIFTINGS. nurrios, S,. C., Sept. 13, '86. Since the terrible earth-quake, linumertoi L as been remnarl:ably qui 3t. At this writixg we are all com :)osed and settled down to hard. lion st work again. Up to this date thout $50 have been collected at this >lace for the relief of the sufferers in "harleston. Thus the great work of -ympathy and love for our dear old 'City by the Sea" goes on. The High School opened, with very lattering prospects, on last Monday. Che principal is assisted by "Miss ie a Allen. of Spartanburg, who has harg, of th, Music departmet, and dio, doubtless, will give entire satis aclion. Misses Sallie and ]famic PBurgess avc returned from their visit to rela. ives at -fayesville. We now have a chance to get a ail-road if we will avail ourselves of he opportunity. Wilson's read can 'e had for S5.000. We feel confident hat it will not take over twice that mount to bring us the Eutawville oad. What do St. Pauls, St. James, 1oncord, Friendship, and Samiyi' swanp townshi:ps say as to raisin.g the ecessarv amount for one or both of bese roads by taxation'? Fiumy. SUrMEILTON, S. C., Sept. 9, 188G. Mn. Em-rou: -It is as calm, hot and ultry as the Asiatic regions. It gets he better of me, especially when you ear I stand six feet with Ilesh, and 80 avoirdupois. If you interpose no 'bjection just give me a half-column pace along side your fair correspond nis, so I can write you occasionally. promise you not to get in Tom's ;ay, neither to bother that Fulton eliow-he is too sharp for me. I ink Tom is a true friend to the ms-as strong a friend as you have ad from these parts; we all know im personally, and the Panolaites, very Wednesday, grab for the T1:s o look up his dots. Some had great pprehensiou that if he was elected to . county oflice he would forsake us, mut we are glad to say his defeat has ;rought no change-he is the same .om, with more cheerfulness and good ishes than ever. He is still our Sub lommissioner and we challenge Ful on, and wager Black River to beat im. But it looks as if there is trou le ahead-he is strongly rged for a :rial Justice. A strong efoit will be aade to have him appointed. We arel utally defieient- in this respect. Vhile the new deal idea floats, the eople must knock the last prop from he tottering fabric. Clarendon has ever been more fortunate in the se ction of offieers. With the Hon. J. .Rhiamne, James E. Tindal, and 1. Plowden, Jr., the county can boast >roudly of the high place which Clar .udon claims among other citizens of' he State. We have heard many hard sayings o injure candidates. We voice the entiment of indignation and watch he character of him who so foully ents his spleen to damage innocent ueu. It is generally believed this rapaign has produced fruits of sad -esults. Wide gaps have been made >etween friends, ill feeling caused romi self motives, the terrible shock >f the earth quake was soon forgotten, -eligion lost sight of, and some who old high positions in the church of .'brist were heard to use words dam ging to his brother's good name. Is his not a sad omen of American haracter? Does politics tend to this? rhen we hope the plan of nominating ~andidates may be changed altogeth-1 r-and the timno extended from two . ten years. We have been more han grieved that self-interest con .rols more than the love of country Lnd we are not free from evil results >f this modern dogma of primary -ections. A prospective pilgrimage 'nabled me to take in the whole of Panola and Summerton, over a travel f five miles, viewing objects no little ttractive--tine farms and a county as evel as a marl bed, well worked pub ic roads, other improvements equally ~ommeasurate, with the spirit and im of the people. Sammerton is a small country vil age, as you know, with rapid strides >f improvement. The handsome and ommodious academy resting on a sope adds beauty and taste to the >lace. The building is not yet finish ~d, but Professor Lanham is to he ound inside, with an assistant, bat :ing against circumstances, planning id working to elevate the minds of us pupils, and store them with knowl dge.
