THE MANNIG TIMES. WEDNESDAY, NOV. 19, 1885. B. S WMKINS, Editor. TIGILANT COMMITTEE. The communication .published else 'here by Mr. Jno. C. Lanham, over his owi signature, having refetence to the vigilance question, came to us first through an article in last week's issue of the Tnms from the pen of of our es Seemed correspondent, "Summerton." We were not aware of the existence of such a condition of affars as is thus set forth necessitating the oramiza tion of a body of this khud. It is a deplorable state in which to be placed, where the feeble administration of the law would suggest the 'propriety of calling in such aid. Though the pur-, pose be a good one, and the designs of those who inaugerated the at tenpt be entirely for the enforcement of good order and general benefit to society, by eeping watch and ward ovev the evil workings of lawless men, yet would nt the experiment be at tended with zoore or less danger? In forming such a committee, men of the best character and standing in the neighborhood are, sometimes, from peculiar characteristics, utterly un fitted for discharging such a delicate undertaking. Some men are so con stituted, as in moments of excitement to fnd themsalves once on the track, ' with the madness of a war and indulging in such excesses as would astbund themselves, in their monea of calm deliberation. . We4ae willing to lend countenance ail aid to everything looking to af ll efre n of the laws, but cannot in stice to our convictions of right do so, without expressing, - feas Eterisined. If this oinmittee can acoemplish th ef aimed at, with the svi nequences frequently Lom, they will certain the hearty approval of law-abiding citizrn.
