Under the finding of the supreme court in the Spartat mills case the mills will have to pay a sum of about $30,000 in' back taxes. A negro has been sent to the penitentiary for twenty years from Bamberg county for whipping his sick child, a daughter, so that she died. A petition is being circulated in Rock Hill asking for the pardon of Former Rev. J. Barr Harris, who is serving a sencence in the Mon tana State penitentiary and whose term expires next April. In view of the present outlook for a curtailment of the production of cotton mills on account of shortage of the crop and high prices, it may be interesting to note that the mill at Liberty has enough cotton on hand to run for a year. In a row among negroes on a pler.atioh near Donalds Wash Seitzer shot and mortally wounded his wife and was himself shot in the head by John Pace, who was a fugi tive himself, having shot his wife about a week before. The Keenan yarn mill, to be lo lated in Columbia, and which will be the third of its kind to be built in the South, has applied for a char ter with a capital of $60,000, the pe titioners being W. J. Keenan and J. I. Mimnaugh. The mill will manufacture a fine quality of yarns for knitting mills. A negro on trial in Saluda county last week for murder wanted to plead guilty but was not allowed to do so by Special Judge Welch. The negro went on trial and was con victed only of manslaughter. Durst was acquitted of the charge of nmur der of old man Shaffer. The Methodist Conference in ses sion in Greenville last week em powered the board of trustees of the Columbia Female college to act with plenary powers as to the prop osition of Mr. F. IT. Hyatt and oth ers concerning the removal of the college to the suburbs of Columbia, to take such action as in the wisdom of the board may seem light and proper as conditions may develop. LARGEST WHISKEY SHIPMENT YET. 2,860 Cases Went Out From Columbia Ini One Day To The Sub-Dispensaries, The State. Friday saw the largest smngle day's shipment of whiskey to sub-dispensaries in the more than ten years' history of the State's li quor business. The shipments ag gregaltedl 2,800 cases, just double the greatest amount that hadh been shipped in a single day when the headquarters were located in the old Agricultural hall b)uilding on Main street, and overreaching the previous high water mark made at the Gervais street place a few days ago by 250 cases.
