SHOT HIMSELF THROUGH HEART. Suicide of the 19-Year-Old Son of Editor J. P. Caldwell of the Charlotte Observer. Charlotte, N. C., Nov. x8.-J. P. Caldwell, Jr., the 1g-year-old son of J. P. Caldwell, editor of the Charlotte Observer, committed sui cide this evening at 6 o'clock by shooting himself through the heart with a revolver. There seems to be no cause for the rash deed. For six weeks the young1man suffered from depression and several times has said he intend ed to'kill himself, but it was thought that the remarks were due to des pondency and were not based on any fixed purpose. tYoung *,Caldwell had been up town most of the day and started toward home shortly after 5 o'clock. On his way homeward lie met a friend to whom he said lie intended to do away with himself. His statements caused some alarm, and upon being communicated to a member of Mr. Caldwell's family a kindly effort was made to change the young man's frame of mind. Without further discussion of his purpose the boy walked into his father's house; passing through the hall in which his sisters wree seated, and going to his room on the sec ond flo->r, lie closed the door. A second late?r the pistol shot was fired. One of his sisters who en tered the room found it in darkness. She made a light, and then saw that her brother was lying on his back across his bed. He had placed the revolver against his left breast, and the bullet had penetrated the heart, producing almost instantaneous death. Young Caldwell had served two years in the United States navy. Since his return home a year ago, he had had several attacks of ill tness and suffered more or less trom melancholia. "Purple Folder."
