THE STYLUS. The Newb-_rry College Stylus this year is printed by the Colum bia State. The reason,-as stated in the editorial, is that "'this large printing establishment is fully pre. pared to do this class of work and to do it well.'' In another editorial it is stated, in an appeal to the alumni for suppo-t, that "you owe it not only to your institution, but to your.:lf, to )ssist in issuing a magazine which will do honor to Newberry College." That is goc 1. The Stylus, since it w-s first es tablished, has I .en prtinf d in one or the other of the printshops in Newbei ry, and while the Stzte has done a very god job of plain print ing, it is very little better than could have 1. en .:ecured in either one of the printing offices in New berry. And cc.inly no 1 :tuer than wouid have beei secu;ed if the autho:-ities had 1. en will,rg to pay the home office what it pays the out of-towni oci2. The editor of this paper, who was the printer of the Stylus for several years, and who, with three brothers, is an alumnus of the col lege, and who for twenty years and more has worked in season and out of season for the collego -s opp,r tunity presented, and who has at ready graduated one son there and has had two mo-e in the college and has one there now, desires to say when ai apl :d ;, made to the friends of the college for a'd that there is such a thing as reciprocal relations. We have l -eti in ile newspaper bnsiness here for seven teen years a11d inl addition to the many free notices during the year we have always during ali these years given at least one entire i-sue of our paper each year to a write up of the coliege. If the college desires its aiuni to stand by it, we submit, the college should stand by the alumni. Tihe advertisements which are given the Stylus by the merchants of Newberry are given not because of any direct benetit to L2 received by them, but as a con tribution to sustain the magazine, and then that tnoney is taken and sent away to help an out of-town I printing office. Is it done really to get bette- work or in the hope of securing the influence of the State newspap: r? WVe trust the authori ties wvill not be disappointed in the influence which they may hope to receive from this newspa: .r. icey may be bene fitted by throwing iside 0old fr;enmds for new ones amid wheni they secure aniy students from these new made friends we hope they will advise us. But the purpose is to tmake the Stylus "L Ater than it has ever been--tetter in mechaniel con struction and better in reading matter." We hope the pturpose may be accotmplished. TPhe innnigration convention held Iin Colutmbia on Tuesday we hope will result in muCh goced to the State. The purpol)se is a good otne. We have long been of the opinion01 that t here should be established in this State a department of inni.. grat ion or agriculture atnd that it woulId pay tuch 1 att er an l:-1 m.iore pronmtahle than spend(ing mioney on ext ibits by the State at expositionsH. Ini fact, to spend money ont exhiibits without such a dlepart ment to take upl the benefnts from such exhibit, woutld 1be mon01ey wasted. It is a source of great regret to us that we cotuld not not get oIl to the Confederate reuntion itn Augums ta this week. E-specially so alter we had inisisted on sonme of our old1 Cotnfederate friends to go with ui. Imiperat ive businmess enigagemenits at home lbarme( usn t he asure We are glad, however, that our friends D. A. Ruff, J. Cal Neel, 0. H. Buzhardt, and E. '. Matthews, were able to go, and we are sure they enjoyed the occasion. It was yur misfortune. The Newl-e..v co,lon market ias 1!e as good as any town in the siate this year. Frequently when [,ivelpool and New Vork were down !ght to ten points, the Newherry market went up as iany poits. There have been sold here this sea o i some twelve to fifteen thousand )ales, about two-thirds of the imount to be received here. We LIsuially get from 18c o to 2j0o( xales. DEPARTMENT OF IMMIGRATION. In connection with the Mattieson :nd other minnig;at ion plans uN sch ue now being proposed and the im migration convention held -i Co lunibia only this week, it way be interestling to note that Governor McSweeney urged action atong hes same lines diring his term of cfice. Governor McSweeney, in his an mial message pr'sented to the gen ral as-mhly in January of this year, said: "It is a noticeable fact, -nd one :t this tile wvorthy of serious con iideration, that the State bi, no immigration agency, or bureiiu of informat ion. In formation in regard to our farming lands is nstan:'y bAig sought by that clbssof thr:y farmers in Canada, the cold No. th west and New England, who a-re looking soutlhward for fut tire hoies. We -have at present no dcpartmeint from which such information nir y 1:2 obtained, and our great agricul iral advantages count for almes. nothing in attracting imm-ants. The great illajority of the other Sta:es of the Union have Iong sice Iecogni-ized the need of such an agency or deparimient and have made provision accordingly. I ear n:estly recominieud that you take some action in regard to this ma' ter. If it is not desired that a arate department be created, its duties for the present nay be de volved uoon tie Secretary of State and the State geologist." Honor to whom houor is due.
