COLUMBIA TIGERS CLOSED UP. Constables Stationed at Every Place and Give Dealers No Chance to Serye Sone Kicking and Fighting. Columbia Record. Sometime before the fair opened it was rumored that an extra force of constables would be stationed here during fair week to look after the blind tigers. The rumor proved true, and if any blind tiger is doing any business it is done in the most clandestine way. In fact it may be stated that the tigers are com pletely out of business. Every place where it was known that whiskey was sold had a constable stationed in it. These took regu lar "shifts" relieving each other, and there was no chance for the dealers to do any business at all. Several of them yesterday afternoon closed their doors altogether, except those which happened to have res taurant attachments. These had tc do strictly a restaurant businesE owing to the constant presence of i constable. In one Main street restaurqnt a visitor called for a drink in the presence of a constable, and being informed that he could not be served he launched out in a general denun. ciation of constables. A fight re suilted and there were hot times for a few minutes. The visitor was badly handled, though he put up a stiff scrap. Notwithstanding their close %,,mttch in the city the constables managed to go out into the country and capture i large quantity of contraband hidden in the woods. As a chronicler of the sayings and doings of the people the Record states the fact that there is a good deal of kicking among a large class of visitors. They want a drink occasionally at night and they can't understand how they could get it last week and probably can next, yet must not be served this week. That's the way they talk, but the authorities are obdurate and are enforcing the law as it has never been done here before. A Resourceful Woman. New York Times. "I think it is a foolish fashion that so many women indulge--that of telling their age wrongly," said the woman with the prem:.urely gray hair. "I can honestly say that I never practice it inyself." "No?" said her friend, withI many tmeanings in the monosyl lable. "'Well ." said tihe first speaker, with a smile--she was a woman with a sense of humor-" the nliet is' I dlon't have to. I have a way of making myself out younger than I aum, if I wi'shm to, without telling a fib at al." "Really?'' inquired the other curiously. "'In what way ?' "I1 put the burden of the fib all upon the questioner. You see, when one of my dlear woman friends --it is alwvays women who are etu rious on this point-asks mec how old I am I say: 'Oh, I' m a year or -two older than you, you knmow, my (lear-at least a year older.
