\ The Pageland Journal1 Published Wednesday Mornings by The Journal Company 1 C. M. Tucker, Editor >j Subscription Price - - $1.00 J Entered as second-class mail matter at the post otfice at Page land, S. C., under Postal Act of March 3, 1879. . July 25, 1917 A. F. Kerensky, the man of the hour in Russia, has been given dictatorial powers to bring order out of the chaos resulting from disaffection in the armies and among certain classes of the people. The Russians have been loosing in the battles of the last few days, following the brilliant victories in the campaign inaugurated early in July by Kerensky. He has again hurried to the front, and it is hoped he will again be able to put the soldiers in a fighting mood. The situation in Russia is serious, but by no means hopeless. The Journal is pleased to note the absence of ill feelings in the controversy between Jefferson and Pageland relative to the location of the proposed east to west State highway frcm Chesterfield to banrnsti?r Tlu> w ri. ter has talked with more than one Jefferson citizen recently, and apparently the people there, as here, are willing to abide bv the dicision ol the highway officials when the matter has been thoroughly threshed out "Of course we want the road," said one Jefferson man, "but il we fail to get it we'll have no grudge against Pageland." Kx actly the same spirit is manifest here. We want the road hecause we think this is for nvAny reasons the proper route, hut we do not want it to keep Jefferson from getting it. We hope the same good feeling may continue to exist. ^ ABOUT TUB DRAFT The list of names printed elsewhere is as nearly correct as we have been able to get it, though it is not official and there will doubtless he a feu errors. In the main, however, it is correct, and from this list the 104 men from this county will be selected by the counts exemption hoard. Messrs. I. P. Mangum, Walker Duvall and Dr. J. II. Harden constitute the board, and the meetings will h< held at ilie county seat. The lists will be verified, and notices will be mailed to each man who " is to appear before the board h.r ' examination. These notices will give the date and place for the examination, and seven days ' will be allowed for filing claims for exemption. These notices] will not be mailed until the board meets and canvasses tlilists, Thursday orFriday or per 1 haps later. The men will he 1 called in the order the nam s are printed in this paper. The first name may be called number " one, the second number two, etc on through the list of fi\e hun | 1 dred and fifty nine names given., 1 The first three hundred and ) twenty-eight will probaoly be included in the first call, but it is improbable that thecouirt>'s quoin 01 int men will be secur-1 1 ed from this number. hi that case others will be called until ' the number is secured. In the 1 opinion of the writer five hun ' dred or more will be required in this call as the per cent in this I county of married men with de pendents is high The man who can not find his 1 name in the list published today mav be reasonably sure that lie1 ^ will not be called in the first ~ draft. However, a second, and perhaps a third, call will likely j come within a few months, and! great rejoicing on the part of un ! called registrants now may seem " sadly out of placet few months| pr weeks henc<h . | j?t of Those Who Are Drawn (Continued from first page) 715 Thomas A.
