July 26, 1916 A CALL FOR HELP The recent floods in the river valleys of North and South Carolina destroyed hundreds of homes and devastated thousands of acres of farmlands, thus rendering: homeless and destitute many, many people. In the mountainous sections the people lived principally in the valleys. Now their homes and crops, and in many instances 1 the soil itself, are g:one. The railroad service has been greatly crippled, and the roads are wash ed away in many places and buried by landslides in others. The people in many sections have been 'reduced to actual a. J e .i wain, ana n is iearea mat some may starve before aid can reach them Relief committees have been named, and the people are responding noblv to this call of these distressed ones. There is little chance that the fund will grow too large, however. This is a splendid opportunity for the people in this section to render aid to their fellowmen of another section who have suffered incomparably more from the recent disasters. This paper will be pleased to receive and forward any amounts, large or small. If vou are sure you will never be in need, you may be excused. ^ Can you tell what the results of two or three weeks "of dry, hot weather would be on crops? The red clay on that road north from Pageland is getting in condition now to emphasize the need for a coat of sand. A few days ago it looked as if the work would be in nrnorpss hv I his time, but no definite action has been taken yet. J. E. Agerion estimates that the work can l e done for $300. We hope to be able to report the work in progress next week. - Representative Finlev is mailing out to citizens in his district a list of more than two hundred Farmer's Rulletins which may 1 e had for the asking. If you leceive one of these, do not i throw it away. Look carefully t hrough the list and write your s mator or congressmon or the Department of Agriculture for the ones you are interested in. These bulletins contain enough iitbrmation to give a man n fair agricultural education, and they sire absolutely free. Ask for iome of them, and then read them.
