The Pageland Journal Published Wednesday Mornings C. M. Tucker, Proprietor ^ Subscription Price - - $1.00 Entered as second class mail matter at the post office at Pageland, S. C., under the Postal Act of March 3,1879. May 20, 1914 Evidently young Trull, who is held without bail for the murder of Sidney Swain in Charlotte Saturday night, forgot where he was. He must have thought he was in South Carolina, where murder is not a very serious charge. ^ The State Democratic convention meets in Columbia today. A majority of the delegates have been instructed to work for re form of the rules governing the ' primary, which is virtually the election in this state. t~ ~ ~i ?: in uie election i\vu years ;igo both factions charged fraud, and there was probably good reason for such charges.. The vote was too heavy to be fair. It is expected that the rules will be so amended that a regisNtratioifcpcertificate NViu ke requir^ach voter as he appr aches the ?Jills to vote. In short, an [attempt will be made to allow each white voter the privilege of casting one ballot, and only one. We hope this can be done. V The list of probalile candidates I for the legislature continues to I grow. Messrs. R. H. Garland, J. I A. Knight and A. F. Funderburk are the latest additions. Besides ^ these three, the following gentle I men have hinted or declared their intention to be in the race for this paying position: B. F. Pe^HRBKs, C. L. Prince, J. Clifton H^^Vers, R. D. Marsh, M. BHWftnson. W. L. Gibson and S. J. why t. We reluctantly take issue with the fair editor of the Lancaster News as to the percentage of lawyers that should be in the legislatures. She is unable to understand why we take the position that lawyers should not control the sessions of the legislatures of the various states, and cites the records of W. F. Stevenson, T. Y. Williams, A. G. Brice and J. P. Carey to show that lawver is a avnonvm for legislator. We grant that these men have mado enviable records but we assert that if as many men of other professions had been elected to the legislature in South Carolina in the last twenty years a larger number would have stood out as brainy men, able to plan and work out legislation of importance to the masses of the people. The re cords of the sessions of the leg islature do not impress one aj being the work of an unusalh able body of men, though tin 1 t - ? lawyers nave a good majority We are still of the opinion tha one profession can not properh represent all the people. Tin r lawyers are more familiar witl the technical terms and tin phraseology of the laws, and fo this reason a few are needed but brains are needed also, an< the lawyers "do not have i monopoly in this line. k Sister, we still fail to see wh; | all professions should not hav i a voice in the lawmaker's hall and we hope to see a good num ber of farmers elected to the leg [ ~"'l f f I CHURCH NOTES Methodist Episcopal IJy Rev. Nashville, Tenn., May 15.?If I knew that what I am about to write would be read and appreciated by any one, it would be a real pleasure to write in the most trying circumstances. We left Monroe in company, with Bro. F. C. Snider of ingate which of course made it easier for us to pass away the time. We have with us Brethern Cato, Caston and Faile, all of South Carolina. Bro. Funderburg for some reason or other has failed to show up, tho we have met nearly every train that would likely bring him. First of all we have not failed to pray God's richest blessings upon those who have made it possible for us to be he'.e. Last evening the convention reached high water mark when nine young men stood on the stage tot^^^eatwo^^^^H^Mj their lives to the lost^^^pT This service made a profound impression on the immense audience of 8,000 people. The services were so impressive that some of the brethren volunteered to pay $600.00 on the salary of a missionary on the foreign field.
