A reader sends us the following letter which we publish that the public may see just how the whiskey dealers are trying to defeat the bills introduced in congress to make it unlawful to make or sell liquor in the United States. "The writer received a letter yesterday from a whiskey distillery in Covington, Ky., containing a blank to be signed and sent to our congressman and to our two senators from this state. Information at the top of the blank led me to think the whiskey dealer is getting scared. The instructions read as follows: House joint resolution 168 was introduced by Congressman Hobson of Alabama; senate joint resolution 88 was introduced by Senator ShenDard. of Texas. These two resolutions provided for the submission by congress for ratification by the legislatures of three fourths of the states of an amendment to the United States constitution providing for nation wide prohibition of the manufacture and sale of wine, beer and other fer- 1 mented and distilled liquors except for mechanical, scientific and medical purposes. Senate Joint resolution 50 is offered by Senator Works, of California. All are measures supported by ' the antisaloon leaqu<_ and other "dry" organizations, which are i flooding congress with letters i and telegrams urging their pass- I age. No state denies to the in- ) dividual the right to use liquors, i The right to use necessarily 1 implies the right to purchase. I The right to purchase is of small i :t it al*. avail u mis auemptea national legislature, by prohibiting man- I ufacture and sale should make 1 it impossible to purchase. We 1 urge you to protest this sumptu- i ary legislatson which effects the < right of each individual to regu- < late his own conduct. We urge < vou to detach the slip below, i sign, address and mail to the ^ congressman from your Atrict at once.'" W- 1 V ; ' TheftutA's Gompanion NA PvAC-nVlt lllrrt ?* ~ JLW x.
