It seeins these vessels, for some 'weeks past, have been fishing off - thed coast fur mackerel. On , Satiar. d#f they ran ito the harbor, and xte Sunday, some- doaen' or more of I-the men camie ashore, and. raised cons. tierabe disturbance in the Own of Lewe. 0 Tuesday morning the viessels put to sea, but failing to dis cover .the fishing grotinds, they re. *tihed'again the same afternoon. Shb tiy after sundown on Wednes. Oay evenng the citizens were aroused to immediate action by the report, that one hundred and fifty fishermen were crossing the beach, threatening to at Sack and burn the town. The mon all turned out, armed with guns, musk. ets and huge clubs. The wmndows and do6rs of nearly every dwelling were 'locked and barred, and the'females * ere In dreadful trepidation. In the - meantime, the assailants continudd to advance until they reached the bridge 'which spans Lewes Creek, one hun. dred and fifty yards from the town. Here askirmish ensued, in which the fishernen were driven back, with a few broken'heads and bones. By this time a posse of the eitl zens' had taken -possession of a can, non in front of Mr. Burr's Hotel, load, ed it with grape shot, and upon the repulse of the fishermen, a volley was fired into them. The night was dark, and it could not be ascertained ifany one was synt. The firing of the cannon served as a signal to the pilots off at the Break. water. -eiveral boat loads immediate ly came ashore, and joining the citi. - ent a pursuit was made after the re. pulsed assailants. Their rear was -rotected by a loaded swivel mounted o4 thebridge, with a slow match kept in readiness. The pursuing party, num. b*ering-a hundred- or more, armed with some sixty or eighty guns, quickly reached the bench, and discovered the fishrmen had emlarked for their ves 6els. The firing of the canon warned them that there is plenty of fight in the men of SuAsex. About twent$ of the rioters made fbrciblfeent-ance Into the...garden of M ic.'io as FoAid and despoiled the pmnisesof a~llthe must rare ex otics, Not content with. committing this outrage upon the property ot an unoff'endimg individual, they'turned up. on Mr. Howardl, and ihrew rotten eggs ait him, and drovre him from his garden. Andther party entered the house of Dr. ifalj,..and insulted the fe. * males. The samte .party burst into the house a'1olriinn, an'd drove the fe mnales intc ..ne back buildings, 'where they'succeeded in resisting the further advances of- the fisherman by bar. rmg-all the entrances. ln the skirmish Mr. Win. A. Mor row had his leg severely hiirt. Mr. Morrow, at one time, stood alone on *the footway wh:ch extends across the beach, and with a single pistol hie kept the whole party at bay. The fishermen stole from the beacb adveral anchors, and all the loose prop. erty they could lay their hands on. When thed disturbance first occurred, a despiteh Was sent off' up the river for the revenu's cutter to come to the as. aistance of the'town. A message was telegraphed back that the cutter was unable-to come on account of having no men with which to man the ves sel. On Thursday .and Friday nights patrols were stationed on the bridge *and.on the beach, where they placed their watch, to prevent the landinrg of any large body of the fishermen. 'The citizens have matters nlow so organi zed as to permit only one or two to'land hit a time, for the purpose of oc~rmg provisions, and supplies This arrangement will avoid the fishermen collecting in the town in .any large - body. With a telescope several small squads of the fishermen * hre r-low seens on the beach off .the llght-house, prowling about, and *pluidering the shore of all property of *a moygable character.
