That "hoble old corps the Palmetto Guntd, have taken this centennial of tnc battle of Fort Mon I trie, in charge, wc have received their "Address" and give an extract as showing (hespirit in which they intend to colcbrato the ?rent. In. rhat contury ho hoar to ils close, doring which our government has exercised its powern, there bay e been divisions and differences; and at a re cent period these assumed the large propt rtions of that civil war which convulsed every part of our country. All will hope that such a contest will never again arise; and when re membered, the lofty devotion of cither ?idc to the convictions of duty, the unsurpassed gallantry and heroism with, which each rallied around and upbore the banner that symbol i/.cd that faith, sha'l ever be recalled as the \>roud heritage of a common country. The civilized world was a pm zed at the vast resources which that contest exhibited, and which showed that they who then fought each other, when iu a common cause they would fight tu getber, would be confident against "the world in arms." Dr. A. J. Larey Commits Suicide. One of the most terrible and start ling events that have occurred in Platte county for many years, took plnco at the villingc of Iatan, about thirteen miles northwest of Platte City, on the evening of the lGtb inst. Wo depend for our information upon a letter received by us from Mr. R;, 11. Rose and a letter received by. Sheriff Coflcy from Mr. William Cal yirtj both g?ntlciffcn being well ac quainted with all the facts. Mr. Rose informs us that on the afternoon of last Monday, as Dr. Larey was leaving bis dwelling house, he informed his wife that if he did anything desperate while he was gone she must not be alarmed but must forgive him.- Not knowing bis des perate intentions she paid no particu lar attention to bis language. It appears that he then went across the street to his office and to,ik a 1 irge quantity of arsenic, and then went into the ante room adjoining. He soon returned and found Mr. Rut ley and Mr. James Git linger in the office and told them what he had done. He spoke to them about his business, and told Railey to take his library, read his h'.oks and take cure of them. He then went and got his Day Rook and handed it to Mr. Gittinger and re quested liim to give some credits to parties' who hail paid him money the day be ore. He then darted for the unto room, and as bo entered the door he pullod it half shut, holding it with his rijkt hand; ho thou took out hi* pocket pialol and placing the mur ale j list ?hove the left ear and, look ing Mr. Railey straight in the eyes, fired the fatal shot ami fell to the floorC It was nbout four o'clock when be committed the deed, and his death occurred, at 7:30 1?. m. Such, in brief, arc-the facts of this most distressing affair. The cause is enveloped in mystery. We, however, see that it has been telegraphed abroad that the Dr. had for several days been ?Irinking to excess and that upon re covering from his spree learned that several of his patients bad required his professional services in the mean-; time, that oac of them, n warm per sonal friend, had died. Wo jjivc the rumor for what it is worth. Certain itii? thought, that Dr. Lnrcy was de voted to his profession and particular ly'-' sensitive .about his professional honor. Remorse for apparent inatten tion to his duties may have caused him to commit the imsIi deed. ? (Dr. Lnrey, we believe, was a South Carolinian, and came to Kansas dur ing ' the troubles in 1850, residing for Key oral years in Atchison county. Re moving to Iatan in ibis county, lie at once, entered upon a large and lucra tive practice which be retained until bis death. He married Miss Hudson several years ago, and his domestic relations have been of the most pleas ant character. CoiMUXTioN.?The Alebison (Kan sas) Associated Press rcporl of last Wednesday contain d somestatemonts concerning the death of Dr. Larey that were utterly untrue. Dr. Larey bad hut neglected his patients as stated by litis report'and had not been guilty of jiny of the conduct imputed to him. On the contrary, he. was an excellent physician and no one could possibly tako a greater interest in patients or give them better attention than he did. lie neglected no duty for which remorse could have seized upon him so unrelentingly as to cause him to lake his own life. We do not under take to say what impelled him to des-' troy himself ns he did, but in justice to his bereaved family and many iuti mate lriends, we cannot let such er roneous statements go uncontradictcd.
