By tho .Vcim and Courier of 1st inst., we see ihnt the oltl city holds its own bravely, in a commercial point of j ?view, its inule has stcndly increased, despite the troubles growing out of the late war, and in the face of the financial difficulties which have swept over the an tiro country caused by the failures of such Iiouws as Jay Cook & Co., Duncan Sherman & Co., and other,, minor, .but still ..important, firms, w ith the general credit of the country rudely shaken, with the South nnd West counting closely each dollar in their possion, nnd wondering where tho next ouo was to be had, the old city has pushed forward vigorously in tho commercial race, nnd now at the end of the commercial year, invites the public to nn inspection of .her balance sheet, showing no "wild cat" speculations, but a firm, growing, nnd inviting basis, of pure, legitimate, nnd paying business operations. AH honor to the "old city by the sea." Stntc News. Cotton has been injured by the heavy rains in Marlboro. There arc twelve prisoners in the jail of "Winusboro. A devil fish was captured in the back creek, Charleston harbor, last week. A postoflico will be established at Helena, Ncwbcrry, with Mr. Zobel ns postmaster. A saw fish, with a weapon two feet in length, was cought by some fisher men off the front beach, Charleston. Sheriff Geiger, of Lexington, has now In his custody ten prisoners, com mitted for different crimes. Tho republicans of Aiken have nominated Dr. F. G. Rockwell for mayor. The election occurs on the 13th inst. Col. John G. Pressley, a native of] .ihn? State, but now residing in Cali fornia has received the democratic nomination for the judgeship in his section. Mr. II. A spelling bee will bo the principal feature of the occasion Mr. Greenville Green, one of the most popular and successful farmers of Sleepy Hollow township, Aiken count)', died Inst Friday of it conges tive chill, at the age of sixty-two years. Tho Baptist union met at Black Creek church, Darlington county, on the 27th ultimo. Ten churches were represented, and, after transacting tho usual business, the convention adjour ned to meet next at Cheritw. Tlic new mail route between Colum bia and Fairbanks, better known as Koon's mill, in this county, has com menced..opera'ion. The mail is to be carried weekly, leaving Fairbanks on Friday for Columbia and returning on Saturday. The first, .bale of new cotton of the Reason, at Sumter, was grown liV .Mr. J. B, Roach, and sohl to M r. A. A. Solomons, on the 20th ult. It weigh ed 405 pounds, and was ginned from 1,308 pounds of seed cotton, at Mr. A. A Californiau story tells of a man who resolved to give up drinking, and went to a notary to get him to draw up an affidavit to that cttect. The document was drawn, read and proved; the party held up his hand and mur mured the usual promise. The paper was then ptoperly sealed nnd deliver ed. "What's to pay ?" asked the pledge-taker.
