P.C. 1 IM I I, _ The Loss of tho Schiller. Of the many shipping disasters of the past winter and spring, the most steamer Schiller of the Eagle line, on the night of the 7th of May, off the Scilly Islands, about thirty-live miles from Land's End, England. Out of three hundred and eighty-five persons on boaid, only forty-three were saved, three hundred and forty-two going down to a watery grave. The wind was blowing a gale ; the aca was run- j ning high ; and without a warning, the noble vessel struck on a low line of rocks called Retarricre Ledge, and went to pieces ifl a very few hours. Many of the passengers, who were in their berths at the time, must have passed almost uuconsciously from the sleep of nature to the sleep of death. But among the sailors and passengers who roached the deck, the scene of confusion that ensued is described as something terrible. And yot amid the agonizing cries of the drowning, and the despairing efforts of terror stricken meu and women, Captain Thomas behaved with n calm and intrepid bravery worthy of his pre vious reputation as a navigator. It was a sad message that came with the first appearance of Spring to tho people of New York on the 0th of May. It was but a few days before that many of them parted with friends on board the Schiller, never ngaiu to meet on this side Eternity. The lessons taught by this terrible disaster must be apparent to everyone, and have been impressed over and over again on the public mind; but somehow the desire for quick passages, the lust of gain, has in nearly every in dance triumphed over the adoption of those rules that would insure comparative, if not absolute, safety in crossing the ocean. It is a lamentable fact that, with all the modern improvemcrts in shipbuilding, and all the appliances now in existence for saving life at sea, shipwrecks among European vessels are, in proportion to the number of ships, on the increase. The steamers now used by the great companies trad ing between Europoaud America, are built to resist the fury of any storm nomattcr how severe, so that nine out of every ten accidents that occur are the result of careless, or at least rash, navigation. By reason of the tre mendous competition between tho companies, great risks arc taken in order to secure quick passages. The most dangerous rocks and shoals are just barely shunned in order to save time. Some concept! ?h of the (lar ger thus incurred may be gathered from tho fact that even with the use of the very best chronometers navigators arc certainly liable to mistakes in calcula tions of from three to live miles; and no surprise is manifested when an error of twenty is discovered. The number of mil road and steamboat accidents is gradually diminishing; and if nil necessary precautions were taken there is good reason to believe that a journey across the Atlantic might ho rendered ?\t least as safe as one across the continent. At present if a ship is lost at sea the owners are paid by insurance companies, and lose nothing except in the matter of repute. If the sugges tion of tho New i ork Tribune were adopted, and they were made re sponsible for the life of every pass enger entrusted to their care, and obliged to pny damages in casoi of loss, voyages might certainly be slower, but fewer shipwro ks would occur. Wanted t j Kan on a Kailroad. A dilapidated looking individual was at the I., C. & L. depot looking for a situation. He said he wanted to run on the railroad- He found a group of railroad employees, and to them he made known his desires. 'Arc you a railroad man?' inquired a gray-haired comfuctor. 'Yes?well, not exactly, either. I hauled n lot of ties for a railroad com pany once.' 'Never run on the I., C.'& L. then?' put in a muscular built throttle-pull er. ?Never did.' 'Have you any relatives on the I., C. (fe L. V asked a lavender-gloved brakenitui. 'Nary relative.' 'Are you acquainted with anybody who runs on the I., C. & L. V savage ly interrogated a wicked-looking bag gage smasher. 'Not an acquaintance.' 'Do you know anybody who ever did run on the I., C. ifc L. ?' came from a freckled-faced messenger. JDunno ns 1 do.' 'Did you ever ride on the I., C. o: L?' remarked an attache of the freight office, as he s'opped a moment and caught the drill of conversation. I 'Never was west of Ciuciunti in my TO?*^-?~~ nfcr 'Did you ever ship any lrcight over the I., C. & L. ?' yelled the ticket agent from his window. 'Never had any freight to ship,' was the melancholy response. 'Did you cvtr mail a letter that went on tho line?' put in a route agent. 'Not that I remember of,' said the 6tranger, feeling somewhat that his chances were growing momentarily slimmer. The men wore silent, and slowly shook their heads. Finally the pea nut butcher piped in : 'Did you ever sit up of a Sunday night with a red-headed girl, whose father hud poor relations that moved year* ago into Knnsrs via the I., C. Ij. and have her fish nick 1 es nut of your pockets to send to the grasshop per sufferers ?' The melancholy man considered a moment and said'No,' with a siyh, The boys shook their heads again and said there was no show, and as he walked away he was heard to remark. 'I C and' L of a Chance of getting a (job on that road,' which seemed to be a positive relief to his ft clings. I^MCMICIIAEL HOUSE. ORANOKHIJUG, S. C. D/ows Editors:?I desire through your paper to correct the statements made in the Prot Citizen of Saturday, May 12 2d, headed the Stale) vs. '/.. M. Wolfe. I think the Editor of that pa pur has done mean act of injustice, and tried to mislead those who read his paper, bj misrepresenting the case. Ilc'spenks of an underground current being brought to hear upon the ? rand Jury. If such was done it was done by Webster. I beard of his going to sonic of the < b aud Jury and trying to get them to tell him what passed in the Jury mom. He says he doe* nut know what made die Grand Jtirv <lo him such a gross act of injustice The (Jrand Jury in iny opitdon were very favorable lo him, for they did not present him upon my whole report to them. 1 re ported him for a graver charge than that of the Stale vs. Z. M. Wolfe. 1 reported him for sending into the Country for a Trial Justice tu assist him in turning loose on this community une of the most lawless men, (under a writ of tntbcUK-eorptu) in the County, and who had been committed to Jail, because he could not give bail lo keep ibo pence, lie succeeded in turning this man loose, on si raw bail?and who in one week, thereafter, violated said straw bond, by creating a general row and light- Upon this fact being reported to Trial Justice Webster. What did he do'/ Why, In sent for Wesley Washington, and his bonds man, released the bondsman and turned Washington loose, Washington thus turned loose, remained at large until our last Court when he was presented by the Grand Jury and Judge lteed ordered a bench warrent to be issued for his arrest, and instructed the (."lerk of the Court to require a bond of six hundred dollars with good and efficient security, to keep the p.>ace, or commit him to Jail for twelve mouths. Washington knowing that he could not give the security has absconded, and our community is in debted to the G rand Jury fur an net that wr.s clearly the duty of the Trial Justice. 1 reported to the f! rand Jury that Washing ton bad brought twelve or fifteen cases to a certain Trial Justice in one day, and in not a single c:ise was a verdict of guilty found. Of course the County has the costH to pay. I reported these facts to the Grand Jury. Who is running the under current myself or Webstor ? 1 will leave it for the people of this County lo judge. Now concerning the case of the State vs. 'A. M. Wolfe. 1 was attending to my duly as Marshal uf (he town, and had taken up a hog, going at large against "the ordinance uf the town, belonging to this woman. She attempted to prevent me from executing that duty, cursing and abusing the Town Council ami myself in an outrageous manner, and creating thereby quite a disturbance, slinging a hatchet she had in her hand, about, and tlo cating to strike me with it if J did not turn the hog loose. I took hold of her anil told her if the did not shut up aiid b'Jfc8&! i hersek'n?aT1r^?l<lt"take lieT to tfij? gif?wf \ house, fhc finally quieted down ami paid the fine for her running at large and I turned the hog loosu and she drove h home ? but billowed nie down the street swearing vengencc and the law She applied to Webster for a warrant for my arrest, lie im mediately granted it- 1 proved by gentlemen die truth fill Inc.? of the case as above sta led. Webster went on with the ease, putting his constable ami mail-carrier on it, who had expn.-sed hitnse'f publicly its believing that I was guilty. He got another man to carry the mail so as to keep this man Mel let t pre sent to sit oil the jury. I most positively deny the charge lhal"l agreed to pay any part of the cost. The winde truth is Webster has got his foot in it and don't know bow to get it out. 1 eiin substantiate every thing I have staled by sworn evidence of gcntlcine.i. The mat ter is this man Webster lias too many irons in the lire. Post muster, trial justice, school examiner, editor of the colored paper, school teacher Ac. This is too much fur such a man?no wonder he is weak and sickly, so nmch pap will kill him, if he is nut relieved of Mtiue of it. Kcspcetfnlly 'A. M. WOLFK. NOTICE. SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS OFFICE.
