A GLIMPSE OP YOUTH. BY DR. J. G. HOLLAND. Maiden, I thank thee for thy face, u Thy sweet, ahyglmce of conscious eyea; s For, from thy beauty and thy grace, U My" life baa won a glad surprise. I met thee on the crowded street? a A load of care on heart and brain? e And for a moment, bright and fleet. ( The vision made me young again. j And then I thought, as on I went, And struggled through the thronging ] ways, . How every age's complement The age that follows overlays. 1 1 Theyouth upon the child abuts down, - Young manhood closes over youth; . And ripe old age is but the crown ^ That keeps them both in changeless ] truth/ So. every little child I see, With brow and spirit undefiled. And simple faith and frolic glee. Finds still in me another child. I . Toward every brave and careless boy Whose lusty shout or call I hear, The boy within me springs with joy And rings an echo to his cheer.' ? A What was it, when thy face I saw. "That moved my spirit like a hreese, Responsive to the primal law . Of youth's entrancing harmonies ? Ah ! little maid??tp sweet and 8hy? Those who have farms may think themselves fortunate, for although they j will not thereby find sudden roads j to wealth, they will certainly prove that persistent farm labor will bring a sure reward. It is worthy of no" tico that the adventurer and specula tor, With blasted hopes and Bhats tered health and fortnne, has in the end to come back to the farm for health and safety. Agriculture is the basis of national strength and wealth, and a most certain and liberal iapport of all who follow it intelligently. Dig after the < Brst light frost, but be sure not to ] let a hard freeze come on them. ; Putting away in dry sand is the safest mode of keeping them. Build el cheap house of good size, and prolure a good supply of dry sand in the dry hot weather of summer, or " *lse dry it on sheet iron over fire. This trouble once taken, the ar- . rangement will last indefinitely, and it will not be much greater than that usually incurred of getting corn , stalks, pine straw, bark, &c?, and building a shelter every year. Put- J ting away in dry sand resembles na- i ture's method of preserving the po* < tato. During the dry season of the j tropics (of which the potato is a na- ] tive,) the tuber remains in the dry, parched earth, ready to grow again ; when the rainy season begins.
