An Oregon Lay. ] Among them that came to speculate in stock and .1 | / enpplies, Was a fellow named Stewart, a man of enterprise: He bought a smtch-taifed sorrel, two years old, which had a white face, 1 And he bantered all Portland 0. ' Thar was a man had a horse, which he thought her pretty fair, She was ginnerally kuow'd as Millard's thousund 1 dollar marc; He hadn't any idea, lie said, of doinganything so J rash, . But he took up Mr. Stewart fortwohundrcd dol- j la rs cash. I So every soul in Portland, 0. T., went straight down to the course, And every cent we borryed, we bet on Millard's horse. And thar was that speculating Stewart with his tmnd iiDon his hip, Ami two men a-following with a tin pail full of I dollars and a champagne basket full of scrip ! Well, they mensnred off the ground, and the horses " got a start, And came running down quite pretty, about four rfe>'t apart, And the Millard mare had it all her own way as . feryiody said, . .Till just as they got to the end of the track that ar' sorrel shot sutiiiu' like ten feet ahead. Arte# we seen that, thar risa most surpriaindin. And remarks like this 'ere followed, "Dog my everlnstin' skin." "I'll *>e dod-darned, and dog-goncd, and ding. f t blamed by Pike." And thar was such a howling, and swaring, and dancing, that ninny old people saidtheyhad nerer seed the like. And that 'ar speckelatin' Stewart, he made mat('<' tcrs wuss; He packed the money in a hand-cart, and didn't care a cuss; And sweetly smiling pulled it off, as if lie didn't mind the heft; And since then he hain't paid no taxes, nor * bought nothing, nor sold nothing, for 1 do suppose that in ull Portland, 0.
