TheD gaily he took her to see her new home, the A shanty by no means enchanted, in "See, here we can live with no longing to cjlJ roam," He said "shan't we my dear," so they on< shantied. cor kit] From the Journal of Commerce. het RAMIE. He The numerous successful experiments of silk, woolen, lace and linen cotton '101 manufactures in several States, and km still more extensively in Europe, have dis created a demand for this new and val- Th uable staple far beyond the present production or means of supply. It is dis- c^' covered that the rurnie grown on the alluvial lands of the lower Mississippi onc has a very long and exceedingly fine ' fibre, far superior to that grown in its na- ue^ tive couutry, Java, and that the yield per 0011 acre is greater. In any of the more ' Southern States ramie can be harvested swc at least three times a year, and each ' harvest or cutting will produce between 'n(l nine and twelve hundred pounds, ma- fi',e king an average annual crop of about 'To three thousand pounds crude unprepur- oru ed fibre, worth at present in Europe ten 8ay 'cents specie per pound. In preparing re8; the fibre for manufacturing purposes it bel loses about ono half, increasing it in PU2 value to sixty-five cents per pound.? J Thus, it appears that ramie, requiring wh comparatively little] tillage to produce his such magnificent results, is the most l*e profitable crop that the planter can cul- 'Tc tivate. ' The fibre, when prepared for tho JIS spinner, is beautifully white, soft and ln ' glossy, closely resembling floss silk in wo' appearance; it is much stronger than ani' the^best flax, and readily receives the C(* most difficult dyes without injury to ? its strength or lustre. To meet the manufactures' increasing demands a company of enterprising and praotical business men have organized "The Ramie producing and Supply Company," and proposes to operate near New Orleans on two thousand acres of the choicest alluvial bottom land in that region. With two or three skilled nurserymen to tend to the plants and one of Messrs. J. & F. Howard's steam cultivators, it is confidently ex- ^ pccted the Company will have four to ze, five thousand acres of canes of their tci wn growth to supply orders next sea- en eon. They hope to produce in the crude state over six hundred thousand pounds, or about three hundred tons ? j A conditional contract for the land on very favorable terms were made last April; and all the plants and roots known to be for sale in Texas have been purchased to commence operations with ? We have reports of English manufac- ^ turess sending an agent to raise, or buy ?pe the ramie in California; but from all FI accounts our Southern valleys are the usi best adopted to its successful cultiva- C01 tion. However, there is ample room, and the demand for years is sure to su exceed the supply. of sai George Peabody's Gift to Gene- I fr< ral Lee's College.?The Richmond pe Enquirer, speaking of George Peabody and his recent donation to the college pr over which General Lee presides, says: fa His latest gift to this great interest is Je peculiarly gratifying to the Southern . people. The South has watched with most appreciative interest the labors of ar General Lee to establish for her beuefit : ar a first class college. Nothing in the j or grand career of her favroite son has endeared him more to his countrymen ^ than the self-sacrificing zeal in their behalf with which he has prosecuted this object since the war. Mr. Peabody, following the promptings of a highminded ' liberality, has donated $G0,900 to (J) Washington College to be applied by General Lee in carrying out his plans for the extension of that institution.? The generous donor could not have applied the gift in any way in which it1 >uld have conduced uiore to the ohjc view, nor could he have done an a ire greateful to the whole South. Ev 3 princely donations to Southern coi )n school education have not awake ch a feeling as well as the compaiati small one to Washington College.
