i? lummuam* ?n arm m inn mi < ? roiaiiv. ~ i Tilt SOLTIJKRN. SYMBOL. BY Af.CF.KT PIKE. What, what is the true Southern symbol, The symbol of honor and right, i The emblem that suits a brave people < In arms against numbers and might; 'Tie the ever green stately magnolia, ^ Its pearl of flowers pure as the truth, Defiant ol tempest and lightning, Its life a perpetual youth. 1 Erench.blood stained with glory the lilies, i While centuries marched to their grave, And over bold.Scot and gay Irish The thistle and shamrock yet wave? Ours, ours.be the noble magnolia, ] That only on Southern soil grows, ; The sytnnot 01 uie everlasting * ( Doar to us as to England the rose. Paint the flower on a lield blue as Heaven, Let the broad leaves around it be seen, "Senipervircns" the eloquent mono, ' Our colors the blue, white and green. Type of chivalry, loyally, viriuc, Tn winter and summer the same, Full of leaf, full of flower, full bf vigor, It bclits those who fight lor a name. For a name among earth's ancient nations, ! Yet more for the truth and the right, For freedom, lor proud independence, The old strilo nt darkness .md light. Round the world bear the Hag ol our glory. While the nations look on and adtniic, < And our struggle, immortal in story, CI,nil ?|,Jt leoo in fill nrYi'Q tlistnirp. Ol.u.. ...V 3 , ( 3^uicvi:rvTui ; From the Alihevillo Press. Mr. Editor.: Your correspondent, "Long Cane/' .-ays he has occasiuly uiei !. a man who says that agricultural societies do no''good." If there arc such meo amuDg your readers, I say to thc:u, come let us reason together upon this subject and sec what "good" similar societies are doing elsewhere. First there is in New York State, an "American Poultry Society," which has ! so far perfected tiie growth offowls that latterly at one of their exhibitions a j "hen hussy," sold a pair Utahina Poo j tra for one hundred dollars, and had a j pair of "White Doeskin" fowls for which he asked two hundred dollars. Second, there arc in almost all of the Northern States, Horticultural and Pomological Societies that have reduced ; these arts to such a perfect science, that j a description of fruit will often sell for j its weight in silver For instance, have not some of jotir readers this past season bought a few ounces or pcrhap* pounds of the Earl)' Hose Potato at k most exhorbitant prices ? Third, Pennsylvania lias her Stock Raising Association, and in consequence | almost millions of mom y arc brought into that State, in exchange for her hogs alone. No one knows the amount of money sent from Abbeville alone, to one Boycr in Pennsylvania, for his White Chester Pigs, which I predict | will be a dead failure here iu less than ( two years. I Fourth, There at the North an American Dairyman's Association, in whose books arc recorded the names and own- | cr's of nearly 200,000 cows, and the number of quarts of milk they give, | and the number of pounds of butter and cheese made annually. In the year , 1SG7, over frit)/ millions of pounds ot } cheese were shipped from the United ( States to Liverpool alone. And yet we as consumers, often pay exorbitant prices fo'- English cheese, becaose we think them better than American, when the truth of the matter is an English cheese is never now-a-days brought into our market. Fifth, There are in the Northwestern States Sorghum Societies, estublishcd solely for the purpose of introducing into that fertile country the several varieties of Chinese and African canes, and hy specific culture to test the saccharine value olYnch variety. Ten years ago Northern made sugar was unknown; to-day millions of pounds of beautiful sugar are untdc in those States, and it requires but little prophetic wisdom to i foresee the fact, ere long the sugar ta. j ..jff ,r;p j i hi in iillj'"iThrnr mtulr * sugar, a?d that will be made in Yankee land, because Sorghum sugar will be made for about h i f of what it costs to make Louisans sugar. These Sorghum Societies actually publish monthly periodicals to inform their patroDS of all tlir various Inventions, discoveries and improvements in the machinery necessary to grow the Sorghum eanc and make - ooct!.. DU^Ul v,uci i j . Sixth. There are at the North Wool Growing and Wool Manufacturing Associations, which exercise a concert of action to benefit themselves, and there by practically injure the selfish, unprogressive Southern planter. In South America the finest sheep arc worth but i song perhaps seventy-five cents a head, i and whv ? One ninonir or reasons is. 1, t , ( . I w * gr<\=?icna! Legislation to such an extent, j thai.i prohibitory tifilF is p acol upon tlic importation of wool, and houeo wo who arc c msumcrs are compelled to pay dearly for the cassitncres and woolen goods we wear, and the manufacturers demand a high price for these articles because the wool moDpo'y ofthe country requires it. Why should not the cotton planters of the South control the manufactories is the woolen manufactories of the Unitdl Siatc9 ? This question is easily and :orrectly answered by reminding our people, that we have not cotton growing i3sociations scattered all over the South" 3rn States. Seventh, The prioe of labor at the North is as fixed as the price of any othjr mcrchantible commodity, consequently the employer pays for his jobs hy the hour, day, month as he would buy his clothing,?according to quality; a good hand will always command more than an inferior one, and in all cases the employer sets the price nnd why? Simply because the vurious associations fix the price of labor as tln-y do of everything else. Now, is this the case of the South ? r... L?et every gram grower answer ior nun self. Ante helium ' cradling" grain was worth -me dollar per day except wheat, and that was worth a bushel of wheat. This latter grain is to-day .worth twice is much as it was before the war, and yet the laborer demands his bushel of wheat for a day's work, though the labor is worth no more to day than it was ten years ago. Give us a thoroughly organized Agricultural Society likewise, and the price of labor will be regulated here as it is at the North. Mr. Editor, If I have not said enough to convince the greatest opponent to Agricultural Societies of their worth. I imn-t withhold further arguments and pronouueo him an Kphraim and let him alone, for I fear he is joined to his idols Truly, IIOGSKIN. Stranof. Cure for a Felon.?A reliable gentlemen in this towD requests us to publish the following cure for a bone felon which his brother has recently tried and vouches for. lie was nearly crazy?hadn't slept for several nights?with a felon on the little finger; went to Chapel Hill to see tlic doctor. The doctor split it open, told him to put on a lye poultice, and it would cure np in a lew weeks. He went Inline; his finder didn't run any, and he still suffered the acutcst pain.? His mother told him to get a toad ftog and put on it. lie did so; anil was immediately relieved. After two or three hours the belly of the toad was turned black and the frog fell off dead. The man fell into a sweet sleep and slept till evening, the evening he got anDther toad und tied it around his finger. He fell asleep and waking in the night he found the frog gone. The next morning he found the frog under the bed aud swept it outdoors, where it died. As for himself he went to .hoeing corn that ()uy.
