For the Camden Journal. ANECDOTE OF ROBERT IIOE, INVENTOR ! OF THE IMPROVED PRINTING PRESS. BV LADDIE TODD. In ISO5 the yellow fever prevailed to a fear- j ful extent iii the city of New York. For sixteen j summers I never left the city when the yellow fever prevailed. One day in the month of Sep-; temher of that year, a young man stepped into 1 my store. Says he: " Mr. T.," (he got my j name from my signboard,) " I'm just landed from a ship from England. My name is Robert Hoe?by trade a carpenter, which I learned from my father. 1 am only eighteen years1 old. And i can't find work on account of the fever. Can von," he continued, " recommend me to board, i will pay as soon as i gei employment," &c. In 175)4 i landed in _Y York with only three cents in my pocket I knew the heart of a stranger, lie was thick-set, five feet four inches in height, skin white as thy snows in Siberia., his cheeks crimsoned with the flush of youth ami the healthful gales of the Atlantic Ocean, and above all, around him was such an air of truth and unvarnished simplicity that our hearts wanned towards him. .My wife had joined us. Says I : "Mv dear wife, God has preserved us i:i six fevers, and i:i seven.? Disease or death lias never yet entered our dwelling. Y? o owe God much. Shall we take this stranger in ? He has no monov; but God has paid us a forehan d. And should he take the fever,,Will thee help my to nurse him?" "I'll nurse him myself," she exclaiihed. lie brought his trunk, lie willingly put. himself under s?trveillance. I kept him much sit home, fearing infection, Before a week ho was seized by the fever. I got the best medical help, illy wife and [ nurse l him. 1 think i have nursed some scores in that disease, but knew not one so bad 1 ^ as he to recover, himself excepted. On the fourth day (few survived the lii'lli) the fever ' was cour&iog through his veins and drinking up I his blond. lie was h-nac-sirl, heart-sick, an'! 1 under the operation of powerful medicine. I seldom left him; conversing with him and striv- j ing to keep up his spirits, tie iasteued his eyes i on my face and exclaimed, " .Mr. T., ! will die, I I will die?1 never can stand this.*' "Die," 1 replied?"yes,"says I, "Hubert, we must all die; but you are not going to die this week." I spoke unadvisedly with my lips; but 1 thought the end would sanctity the means. 1 knew ' when the medicine ceased operating there j would he a lull (as we say at sea) in tli fever. ' I felt his pulse. " A'ow," says I, " Ib.b.rt,you arc Jury per cent better already. i ou aiv not going 10 die this turn. 1 hope to sc.; you a master-builder, married-to a bunny Aiitoicun toss; and to hold your grand child iti my arms vet." My words were prophetic. I Jo became a master-builder, and married a fair American, in 1S45, just forty years thereafter, I was sojourning in .New Jersey. When my trunl: was set down from the stage, a 'nan of respectable appearance was looking on. Says 1: " Sir, I am j a stranger, i don't like to put up in a tavern. I Can you direct me to private boarding for a I wee!; I" Says he: "I can, if you will step with ' mo round the corner." (lie knew my name;' 1 I knew not his.) 'Jdie sun was iust sct'iu". at ' " i the close of ;v mild summer day. On the pi-izza , of a neat brick building sat a comely matron, ! who from iter appearance, might have seen twenty-eight summers. ' Jn Iter lap sat a babe of six months. "Good wife," says Mr. <"this, is Mr. Thorburn, from New York, lie wishes ' private board for a week. Can you neeommo- ! date him I" " Yes; for a month, year, a life-1 time," she replied. " I have hear! front my father, and my mother has tol l me, bow Mr. 'J', i was the instrument, under God, of preserving his life." "What was your father's name?"! gays I. " Robert Hoc," says she. " And is j that your child!" " ll is." 1 raise-! it fro* t | her lap?it smiled in my face?1 kissed its J pouting lips. " Now, Madam," says f, "this I rt*\? mi* npfiiilini'V 5c fi Hill...! in " I " Cast thy broad mjhjii the waters: thou shal. find it after many days." When I hat!ted hi burning temples and pressed his throbbing head. I little thought that there lay the germ of that ( uiacliiuo which was desthed to revolutionize the world of literature. " lie not forgetful to j entertain strangers," saith the Apostle i'eter.? | He died in peace about ten years ago. GRANT THOU 11 UllN. Camden, March, IS "A i ' THE DOOM OF KOSSUTH. " Communipaw," the talented foreign correspondent of the llostoo Post, writing from Udinburgh, has the following excellent remarks in reference t?? the treacherous incarceration of, this noble, but unfortunate patriot: You will have seen by the public journals that the brave Kossuth i3 to be imprisoned for life, in a fortress in Asia. After al! the assumed independence of the sultan, the protests of the English and French ministers, and the sympathy of the lovers of freedom throughout the _ V 1 1 4l l i f it rn i t worm, iiio supreme noau oi imp t uri.i^i empire has consented to become the jailor of th? auto, l cratof all tli" llussias. France and England look quietly on, ami apparently, ami mo doubt reidly, arc] *-rfectlv satisfied. Ford IV.lin T>ton is mum on the subject, and the London Times rejoices. That mouth piece of tyranny, with all the haughtiness of a despot over the fall of an honorable foe, says Kossuth is " most un-. grateful." ^ es, the incorruptible patriot, whom gold could not buy, was defeated by Austria in i a struggle between a despot and an enslaved people. He fled to Turkey, a country that was at peace with all parties who affected to lie com- \ cerncd, and the Emperor of Russia demands his expatriation, and after a good deal of hypocrilieal diplomacy, the hero is seized on neutral ground, and, with his brave followers, is sen- ' tenced by the Turki !i sultan to drag out the remainder of his existence in an .Asiatic fortress, i Such is one instance of "might" being "right" ' in the eyes of the law, as iuterpi. ted by a lew j frail mortals who are destined ;'.r a few short years to hold the masses in s! . -ty. But the time will come when that pow< i wit is slowly but surely waking up the serf and the peasant, will hurl the tyrants from their : ones ami establish governments of the fundamental principle that all power rightly belongs to the people themselves. Let us wait and hope: the tint] is L stirrh/ cumin" when the strong arm of justice will scatter crowns, sceptres and thrones, like chair before the wind. The musses of the English people are on the j side of patriotism, but the most powerful of the organs of public opinion, the government officers, props of the throne, am' the great property holders of Great Britain, are glad to see "rebels" and "upstarts" dragged into dungeons, for presuming,to raise an arm for their countries, their firesides, and their little ones. Like Cromwell before the battle of Naschy, Ictus pray to Heaven and keep our powder dry, for we know not when wc may need the aid of both.
