It is often heard of at the North hut never seen al the South. I have often heard persons express the greatest apprehension and dread of the negroes, and they could hardly believe me wheh I have told them with what perfect fearlessness of nil insurreetionary movements I have travelled and . dwelt among them. Even now, at this present | writing, I am upon a rice plantation, thirty miles frorn Charleston, and insolated Irorn neigh- | bors, where there are upwards of 200 slaves, j nod about half a dozen whites, including wo-j men and children, occupying two houses, as open and free as a New England farm house, I and as free from all fear of being disturbed hy : the negroes, as the owner of that farm house is : of his own children. No servant in public or private houses in any of the Free Stales ar??o trustworthy, or so kind or respec>fiil, as these n?iaaeoltU elococ " A nfl tl'hv wlinillil ihoV I""' J -?j not he ? for here a negro is treated with kind, ties* and respert, hut as a negro, and not eleva ted to the level of a white man. How is it at tho North ? There he is constantly told that in everything hut his color he is equal to his j ' white brother," hut in all their actions the ( said white brother takes care to impress it up- > on the "inan of color" that he is not a white | man, and never will lie treated as one. The i consequence is he is discontented and unhappy, [ and sighing fir freedom from his degraded po- I silion in society ten times more earnestly than , slaves sigh for freedom in the South. Why then would you abolish?not slavery, as you view it, fur it is not here?hut tho con- | diiion orthings that cnuide a low wanes to 6u- ; perinfend ami manage a largo number nt no- j grow, and rati?e them to labor and provide for I their own cnmfbitable support, in a far better I manner than they would do if freed from tha' j superintcdence and management of a superior j mind? * ? Abolish it you cannot. Change it yon may, but only to put it in a worse form. The rice ; swamp* of South Carolina, and th?* sugar fields of Louisiana, and i bo Ilroad acres of cotton in j all the Southern Slates, that never have been j eultivated by any but negro laborers, never will : lie; and there, as long as these lands continue | to lie cultivated, iho ne<rro will be a slave to ' the white owner, rail him hy what uame you j will; and never oiill his condition he belter than it is now. Why then will you continue to agitate the i subject, unless you are determined to dissolve ; the Union? You have called, and are daily i calling, as good men as ever lived, hy .^11 the vile names that the copiousness and billingsgate j or the English language can furnish, merely! because he calls the negro slave, instead of brother," until you have goaded their high j horn spirits to the last point of forbearance; und unless you cease the irritation fhat you ! have so long persevered in, the days of this Union are numbered. "A house divided again*: j itself cannot stand." 1 write to you iu the spirit of brotherly kind- ! ii??sb, to beg of you to pau*e and reflect. I j )iiive no iutcrest to prompt me to advocate the ; cause of the South, hut 1 know her people well, i and tnote, noble sons of America do not breathe; t none that possescs ail the attributes of good I men, than do a large majority of those that you j denounce ft*u Inhuman monsters," ' lruf^?!:ef: I jti human flcJi and blood," and "unwotihy to j associate with freemen," because they conUn- | ue peaceably to exercise the right that yourjancesters neeorded to them, and to cultivate the j iv,.,? it...:.. i..i..?t: :11 ..... Qj~ The improvement in the complexion caused by tho use of Dr. Osgood's India Cholagogue, is one of the prominent tests of its healthy action upon tho bilia. ry organs. * Tho appearance of the 6kin denotes with much certainty the condition of tho liver; especially if t he derangement of this organ has been of long stand ing. It is matter of common observation that Western and Southern men carry in their countenances tho marks of their residence, from lite almost universal effect of a bilious climate upon the liver, and through this organ upon the complexion. The above excellent medicine may lie found at tho Drug Store of James R. McKain. This world is indeed a world of pain, disease and death, and were it not for the improvements constantly taking place in the medical science, which lend to mi tig.ite those sufferings, file would almost ecasc to be a blessing. That class of our citizens who arc suffering with Weak Backs, Rheumatism, Gout, ?fcc., should loso no lime in making use of the celebrated "Jew David's or Hebrew Plaster," which is literally sweeping that class of diseases from the land.
