THE CAMDEN DEBATING CLUB. - Mr. E H'or: li is :i source of regret, to see such a manifestation of indifference to the ennse ? of education and mental improvement, as i< exhibited among its, in permitting such an old and honorable institution as the Camden Debating Club, to fall into tolnl neglert, if not utter dissolution, by the inattention of its members. It is one of the oldest institutions in our town, and one that has reflected as much honor on it as any in our midst. It has been in existence f.r some twenty two or three years, and that it lias been of incalculable benefit to :t!l members \xho have piven it any attention, ran not l.p doubted. There is no association so well calculated to improve the mind and pivp an easy and graceful (low of language?"ndeed. this ?s proven by the fact, that many of the leading men of our town have Iwen members, and owe n>? doubt, a preat part of the success they now enjoy, '<> tin' information pained there. Some thiity or forty names are on the list at this time, and at no meeting are there etionph present to constitute a quorum. We cannot imapine what has brought about this spirit of indlflerenre.? While the society afiord* an exhanstless sottrce _* of knowledge and tnith, there cannot he a more apreeahle recreation than spendinp an hour or two once a week, in hearing the different opinions advanced oti subjects of interest to all.? kWe call upon the intelligent voting men of our town, who are members, and those who are not. to give this subject the requisite attention, and not permit our venerable institution to sink into oblivion. We hope the members will make an effort to save it front the "tomb of the Capu* lots." ntul that it mnv be soon rcensrilatod to throw abroad in our community, its moral and healthy influences. 1)1 VLECTICUS. M;iv 10. ^ THK CIIKV'A.SSI*' A T SUik'.S The news from the crevasse last evening was again of a very discouraging character, j At 3 o'clock, t). m. tiic work was progressing I *. finely, and strong hopes were entertained that j the breach would soon he closed. At that time , a damper was put upon the. confident anticipations of the laborers hy a timber rail, which was j drawn toward the crevasse by the strong cur- . rent, and striking one of the pile drivers, drove it from its moorings, and sent it nearly through the breach. Discouraging as this accident j was, it was exceeded by one which took place . in about half an hour afterwards. Another and a larger rait came rushing toward the ere. -vague and against the works, tearing away the steam pile driver and several piles that had ! been driven. Twelve, negroes, belonging to Minor Kenner, esq., were on the pile driver at the time the accident accurred, and but lor their presence of inind in promptly jumping on the raft, they must have been drowned. The rait swung round aflcr striking, and again floated off, hut the steam pile driver was left aground in the breach at the time the friend to whom we are indebted for the above particulars left. Notwithstanding these disheartening events, we are happy to slate thai the efforts to stop ! the crevasse have not abated, but rather in! creased, and those who have the matter in charge feel confident that a large portion of the breach will be closed before night. Mr. Dunbar, the efficient surveyor of the Second Muni, cipality, was to leave the city for the spot at an early hour this morning, with over one. hundred j men and appliances to facilitate the work, and i expected to reach there by sunrise. in auiliiinn to tlx* accidents wiucii nave oc: rurred, the weather has been extremely unfaj vnralile most of the time since the crevasse took j place. The men. in addition to the annoyance of being almost constantly in the water up to their arm pits, have been lor the last two or j three davs drenched with rain. These unto, i ward circumstances have, as a matter of course, had a discouraging effect upon everybody concerned, and have retaided the operations. The water rose several inches in the swamn yesterday, and was last evening running over tin* Shell road into the canal H?r some distance this side of the Half way Hons", and covered the road at the New Uasin warehouse. It is also setting up in rear of the Second Municipality. hating reached Dryndes street, and already done considerable damage. A large number of houses are surroundedliy water, and can only be reached by boats. A large number of hands were engaged yesterdav in throwing up embankments on the lower side of the New (.'anal, and it was about ' as much as they could do to keep pace, with the | rise of the water. Several outlets have been m'lflu i n tiny p'tnol l?i?!nW tliA \ff?l?iit*in \) i/!nr<> 1 ... .... ........ ........ ..... ............ .v.-.g,- , ' which allow a large quantity if water to pass off into tin? swamp lielnw, otherwise we think the rear of the First Municipality would soon lie inundated. Whatever the public authorities can do I should lie (l.me instantly. Nothing hut the most prompt and energetic exertions will satisfy our citizens. Another Crevasse.?We learned yesterday that at about noon, the levee in front of the powder magazine, on the other side of the river, about three miles helow the ferry land ing. at Algiers, gave way tolhe extent of eighty or ninety feel, submerging a quantity of gnn powrter which had been landed there in kegs. The .Mayor, Mr. Crossman, was immediately informed of it, and he forthwith despatched a pile driver, with men and lumber, to assist in closing the breach. The police jury was also immediately convened, and measures were [ adopted for the purpose of looking to the secu- i rity of the levee. NVe were informed that unless the crevasse be soon stopped, the powder magazine will inevitably be. swept away. i The Morganza Crevasse.?The news from this crevas-e, in the parish of Pointe Coupee, is rather melancholy. . The Pointe Coupee Kcho of last Saturday savs : The crevasse at Morganza is spreading its j ravages to a frightful extent. It is now more | than a quarter of a mile wide, and of such fbicc and volume, tlial tin* roar r>f waters may lie heard several miles distant. A portion of the Morgan plantation is overflowed In the tear; the. water is from two to five feet agitisl the side levee, which looks weak and threatenin" in places. There is now no way of travelling to the Fordoche except in skiffs. A committee appointed liy the police jury to examine the po-siliiliiy of stopping the crevasse report , it totally impracticable. The intelligence l?y the Canada, of which full details will lie found in our columns this morning, is generally regarded as of a favorable character.
