? AGRICULTURAL. MANURE. 'To t?iO Editor of tlic Southern Planter: Dear Sir: Manure has been very justly stvie ? the ".sheet Anchor ot't e Farmer*?as such, I esteem it. Every d:r cted eff >rt, therefore, to improve the </urmtity and quality should be regarded with interest by intelligent and enterprising far- 1 meis. 1 shall attempt, in as plain a man- , ner as 1 can, to tlnoXv out s ?me hints bv " ? ' . ' r Which both quantity and quality oi nia-n nure may be greatly improved* Farmers; t should make their stable floors where hor-, ses or other anima's 3re kept perfectly j tight so that none of the urine would pass ( through them, and they should elevate the fl >or a little, next to the manger, so that ihe urine may flow out? fix underneath the lowest point of the fl ?or, a gutter or conductor to receive theurin--^constructed as to convey it to a >eservoir, prepared to receive it, winch must be w II sheltered, and protected from the weather,? The reservo;r may be made of timber or of bricks. If of the latter, it should be well plastered on the inside with hydraulic ?* cement, to make it tight. Let the old solid excrements, with the ordinary cleanings of the stablcs.be thrown into this resorvoir, with the liquid; put also, f >r. everv laver of the solid excrements of a f-ot in thickness, a thin layer of plaster of Paris. I will briefly state my reasons P>r recommending this plan The liquid excrements are of so much greater value than the solid; at stable floors are generally constructed whole of the liquid is lost, exr cept what is absorbe ' by the the solid excrements and the litter. If is the liquiif excrements alone, which enables the solid excrements to emit ammonia, which being thr ?wn out in the usual way, unprotected from the weather, the i mom rnt putrefaction takes place, ho ammonia escapes into the atmosphere, in the state of carbonate of amin >n;aand is lost; the other soluble salts are washed out by the rain; the remainder is of but little comparative value. The plan proposed has this advantage, first, a saving of all the urine, (any one who may practice this plan eft'ectua'ly, will soon be astonished the quantity of urine lost;) secondly, protec'ion from weather; and thiidiy, all the ammonia will he retained. Plaster of Pars being the sulphate offline, will convert all the carbonate of ammonia (which is very volatile) into the sulphate of ammrtriiu hoc nr? v.ilntiliK- thnu till* ?l?V/llia| TT IIIUK MU>J IIW > | ? .? ..... . "whole value of the manure is retained for | the use of the crop. Having been for the. last six moi'ths, engaged in manufacturing chemical manures from human excre-' ments, I have been compelled to turn my attention to the study of agr cultural chemistry, I can, therefore, with confidence recommend the ab >vc plan to your numerous readers. Manure, made in this manner, will be vastly superior, perhaps ten ti nes as valuable as that made in the usua way. I am making an interesting exoeriment upon wheat with urate, and tn the spring j shall make ao experiment w t.1 poudrette and b >ne dust on corn. The results I w.ll make kn nvn in du ; time to rny brother farmers t'troug you * '0:1 rna?. Gkors . \Voiidfi.n. Mr. Wiodfin. from the official stati m wh ch h fills, nas a nnst excellent opportunity of experimenting upon urate an'1 p >udrette, wfveh arc exciting s? much attention in the agricultural world. This opportunity, we are pleased to hear, he has improved in a manner as cieditab'e t> hmistdf as beneficial to the comnviitv.? , We are very happy t > a 1-1 his nam i to the , list of our correspondents, and will lo-?k . with much i terest for his promised com- , munieations, i J, ON RAtSINO IRISH POTATOES FROM SEED. A correspondent of the Massachusetts ' ploughman says:?Having been frequently asked how to raise potatoes from the 1 seeds of the balls, and believing it very f important to pro luce new varieties bv this j process.! will describe my mode of doing t? When the bal's are r pe. mash them ^ wash out th seeds, dry and lay them up f ?r use. S ?w them like carrots or parsnips. and keep the plants free fr >rn weeds. Each stalk will have one potato, and sel- t d >m m ?re than tw >. Thoy vary in siz", P but are seldom larger than a pigeons ejg. Care sh >uld b; taken in digging th :rn, to notice whether two or m ?re belong to anyone of the stalks. Two or more be- 1 . longing to one sta!k, are of one kind and i variety, and should he secured in one pa- f per, and planted in one hill. I baliov. ' there are as many varieties as there are j stalks the first year. t Save only the largest and best shaped. < preferring the kidney-shaped. Plant them fifteen inches apart, with only one potato in a hill, except wher more than one be- ? long to a stalk. You will then have as many s ?rts a* you have hilK When vnti dinr them, keen the d'fferent sorts separate, and save only the best.? < The next spring plant all belonging to one hill, and then put down a stake; and so of the rest. In this manner I have obtained fourieen bushels of one sort the fourth year. The lab??r is but little, and I think the ad- vantajres are great. S. W. Bridgwater, Nov. 27,1841.
