February 1th, 1857. lio-ly 1 - g L - I' ^1 I l> I SILVERSHOT; I OB, THE AUTOSSEE CHIEF. A TALE OF BORDER LIFE, Br J. WITHERSPOON ERVIN. (S) It proposed by Messrs. GILBERT <fc DARR. proprietors of the Sumter Watchman, to publish in a permanent form, thai most interesting Southem Talc, entitled SILVERSHOT j _ on, THE AUTOSSEE CHIEF, composed by our fellow-townsman, Jno. W. Ervin, Esq., and which appeared originally through the columns of our paper. They are induced to this step by various eon* side rations; among them are the following: 1. The Tale itself is of the highest order as to literary merit, and as to varied excitiDg incident from beginning to end. ] 2. It is intensely Southern ip its character, locality and sentiment 8. Its moral features rise vastly above what even may be found in the most approved fieti tious writings ol Ibe day. mere is not, an ? preseion or allusion within its whole compos* which would grate upon the ear of piety or medesty. It ia manly, generous and noble in all its teachings. 4. Those who have read it as it came out through the columns of the Watchman, call loudly for its publication in the Book form; and those who have read only detached portions of it are more solicitous that it should be thus published. 5. Soutfi" Carolina owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Ervin, second only to that which she owes to Mr. Simms, for his zeal aud skill in matching from oblivion to which they were fast passing, numerous thrilling incidents connected with her early settlements, and especially, with her Revolutionary struggles, wliicn contribute largely to add new interest to her classic soil. 6. Mr. Ervin has never l>een at all adequately remunerated for his abundant labors in his oho>> sen field of literary toil. The columns of the Watchman for years post, as well as the magazines of our State ana elsewhere, evince bis untiring industry and merit as a writer. 7. It is the desire of the Proprietors of the Watchman, who feel the pressure of strong obli* gation to Mr. Ervin, to do something for him, which may largely contribute to place him, as he richly merits, among the first class of writers, by the publication and wide circulation of this his most extended production. Tliey are about to incur great labor and outlay of money by this (for them) new undertaking: but they feel assured that the people of South Carolina, and not only of South Carolina, but of the South generally, will sustain them fully and reward one handsomely, who by birth, education and every ennobling sentiment, is devoted to her best interest. Mr. Ervin possesses the happy talent of throwing into the warp and woof of his productions. Southern life and Southern feeling most attractively. These are some of the reasons which induce the Proprietors of the Watchman to embark in this undertaking. They send forth this circular under the confident hope, that a short time will bring to their office, a list of subscribers, which will vastly more than repay them for their lal>or and actual outlay of money, and thus put it into their power to hand over to their friend, the author, something approximating, at least, to the value of his elegant, interesting and instructive production. Terms.?The work will be published at the extremely low price of One Dollar?lower, it is believed, than New York wholesale rates?in order to place it within the reach of all classes of persons. To enable tfhem to meet the heavy demand, incurred at the start, in the publication ofthiswwk, the proprietors are compelled to require advance subscriptions, for which money they are to lie held responsible, iu the eveut of failure or casualty. Each purchaser, therefore, will be expected to pay for the book at the time of subscribing for it. CHARLESTON AND GEORGETOWN To Cheraw. STEAMER PEE DEE.
