* Farm, Garden and Household. / FMUmlnK Fowll. Luck Hooper writes from Paris to the Philadelphia Press " The greateat curiosity in the Jardin d'Aoclimation is the singular fowl-fattening maohine, which has been in operation for a short time, bat which is a great success. Imagine the top of a round teatable divided off into sootions, with a partition between each section and a board in front with a half-moon-shaped aperture in it. In eaoh of these sections an unhappy duok or ohioken is oonflned by a chain to eaoh leg, and under eaoh is fitted a tray, which receives all the dirt and is emptied daily. Through the center of this structure goes a ronnd post, and there is a series of suoh tea-table tops to the roof of the building, e?ch with its divisions and its imprisoned fowls. At stated inter vala a man cornea ronnd with a somewhat complicated machine filled with a kind of thin gruel, and fitted with a pipe at the end of a long India-rubber tube. He introduces this pipe down the throat of a duck, presses down a pedal with his foot, and a certain quantity of food is forced through the tube into the creatures craw, a disk above showing exaotly what amount of force he is to use and how much food passes. This process iB gone through with each fowl till all are fed, and it is repeated four times a day for ducks and three for ohiokens. Two weeks snffloa to fatten a duok, but three are necessary for a chicken. Apart:from the necessary oonfinement of the birds the prooeBS does not seem to be a cruel one, as the amount of food forced down their throats is not excessive. The duokB whioh I saw fed did not seem to suffer in the least, and in faot when they saw the man approach most of them became olamorona for immediate attention, and pluoked at his clothes as he passed, with eager beaks. The Barrel of Pork. it appears mat me recent action of the Oinoinnati Chamber of Commerce in adopting the national standard barrel of mess pork was in violation of an Ohio law, and therefore is nugatory. The law reads as follows : " That each barrel of beef or po>rk put up for exportation in this State shall contain 200 pounds weight of. Bound, clean, well-slaughtered meat, and such only as is well-fatted, which shall be denominated as fellows: * * * Each barrel of mess pork shall consist of twenty-five pieoes, of eight pounds weight eaoh, as near as may be, making 200 pounds of pork, taken from the middlings or sides of hogs weighing upward of 200 pounds each. * * * The pieces of pork shall be- packed on the edge, with at least fifty pounds of clean, fair salt, and two ounoes of saltpetre to eaoh barrel, and when thus packed and headed eaoh barrel shall be filled up with strong pickle." This makes it clear that neither the present standard nor the previous one of 196 pounds conformed to the law. Indeed, one is as oomplete a violation of the statute as the other, and consequently the Chamber of Oommeroe cannot entoroe the new standard. Wh?t-Qrowlii( Maxims. Somebody has been at the trouble of oondensing a great deal of information about wheat-growing in a very small oompass, and somebody else has set it afloat without eredit. Olover turned under makes just such a bed. The best seed is plump, heavy, oily and olean. About two inohes is the best depth for sowing the seed. The drill puts in the seed better and cheaper than broadcasting. From the middle of September to the last of October is the best time for sowing. If'drilled, one bushel of seed per aore ; if broadcasted, two bushels. One heavy rolling after sowing does mnch good. For flour, out when the grain begins to harden; for seed, not until it has hardened. T* PreMrre Grapet. A lady from Westfleld, Pa., writes a very appreciative letter. She sends the following : " First, pick off all unsound or unripe ones, and lay the dusters in an empty room on papers until dry, for in all packages some will be crushed and dampen others. Then an empty crate will do to pack them in. First a layer of grapes, then a thickness of paper, so as to exclude the air and keep them separate, then grapes, then paper, and so on until you have three or four layers?no more. If the box is to hold more, put in partitions to support the others that are to be packed. We packed hundreds of pounds thus last year, and (her kept perfectly until the middle of March, and, had the supply not been exhausted, they could have been kept much longer. Let Us Consider. Since the introduction of distilled spirits in the sixteenth oentary, they have been habitually prescribed as remedies. We know thai aloohol, in all its forms, is pernicious to health. Knowing these things, end that under l1 the system of treatment which includes their nee, the mortality ajoong the sick is, and ever has been, enormous, is it not worth while to try the effect of a remedy which combines in their high, .est excellence the qualities of a tonic, an alterative and a regulator; contains no mineral bane or murderous alkaloid or aleoholie poison ; does its curative office without pain, and with uniform oerteinty? Dr. Walker's Vinegar Bitten fulfills all these conditions, and is now effecting the most extraordinary cures in oases whsre every "specific of the faculty has ignominionsly failed. Consider, in view of these facts, whether any sick person is justified by reason ana common sense in declining to test the virtues of this undefined end irresistible remedy.?Com. , V NEWS OF THE DAY, I trots ot Interest from dome end Abroad Mrs. W.
