Col. Hatch has reported to Gen. Ord, commanding the Department of Toxas, that two of a party of United States sol? diers, sent out from Ringgold barracks, to watch for Mexican raiders, have been | killed and their comrades arrested, charged with the murder of a Mexican killed in tho affray. The statement is mado that the Mexican population East of the Bio Grande is in league with the raiders, hence the arrest of the soldiers. Tho Secretary of War has addressed a note to the Governor of Toxas, stating that President Grant intimates that tbe Government troops, stationed on the border for the protection of citizens, will be withdrawn, if they are subjected to such indignities whilo doing their duty. In view of a prospective raid by Cortina, this action would seem harsh and unjus? tifiable, but the United States troops] stationed on tho border are entirely in? adequate, numerically, to cope with the I hordes of greasers who go and come as | they please. If the troops are with? drawn, it will doubtless lead to a more thorough and compulsory organization of the Texas militia. For some time, the American ranohe-owners have had their own organized forces to repel inva . sion, nnd in the event of an increased I ! system of raiding, the Texas Governor | I will have to order out the militia gene? rally in the Western part of the State, . which, of course, will lead to positive| hostilities on n large scale. Four com? panies of Texas volunteers are now kept I in readiness along the border to meet | raiders. Some of the rauobe-ownt have supplied themselves with artillery ] and fixed ammunition at their own ex? pense, and there 1b every reason to be? lieve that every effort will be made to j restore quiet. j Phoenix Hook and Ladder Company. npiHE regular monthly meeting will bo I X held in the Hall, TO-MORROW (Monday) EVENING, at 8 o'clock.
