BY JULIAN A. SELBY. A Sad Cask of Suicide.?The vil? lage of Woodhull, Steuben County, N. Y., was greatly excited on Thursday, by the report that Mrs. John Farris, daughter of the Rev. Joseph Thomas, of the Woodhull Presbyterian Church, had commit? ted suicide, near Watkins' Glen, by throwing herself in front of a locomotive on the Northern Cen? tral Railway. The dccoasod, who was only twenty-four years of age, a few months since made the ac? quaintance of John Farris, a dry goods clerk, who came from Ithaca to Woodhull. Ho wooed and won the girl, and a few weeks since they were married. On arriving at Watkins' on a wedding tour, and spending a few days, Farris' man? ner changed. He became intoxi? cated daily, and finally he pushed his wife from him, and to her hor? ror coolly told her that she was not Iiis wife, as he had been previously married, and his wife was living at Ithaca, and with this he took his departure, leaving the distressed young woman to the cold charity of the world. She was too proud to return home, and Bought service as a domestic in a family at Wat kins', where she remained until the evening she committed suicide. The Rev. Kevin Woodside, Brooklyn clergyman, who got into a very unpleasant predicament through feminine babble, was fully exonerated from blame by his pres? bytery last week. Mr. Woodside loved a young lady, who married a worthy young man. The young man died in about a year, his wife, in the meantime, having given! birth to a1 child. Unfortunately, fier marriage had been surrepti? tiously performed by a colored mi? ldster, and was not generally an? nounced: The baby was straight-1 way attributed to the Rev. Mr. Woodside, who was known to have been in love with the girL The fact of her marriage, however, was established, and Mr. Woodside is now all right It is unsafe for a clergyman to dwell in Brooklyn. The case of Carruth, the New Jersey editor who was shot in the head by Landis, a few weeks ago, is certainly a curious one. The ball penetrated the brain so far that it could not be removed, and his death was looked for as a mat? ter of course. Contrary to general expectation, he is said to be reco? vering, and is able to walk outl doily. The ball is still imbedded I in the head. As he has been treat ed by homoepaibic physicians, the j school of medicine to which they' belong will doubtless consider this result as a very tall feather in their j cops. The continuance of the strike of i the Pennsylvania coal miners is] very seriously affecting the coast? wise commerce of Pennsylvania. I The Ledger says that were the coal trade of that city at its usual vigor at the present time, there would be 100,000 to 150,000 tons of coal sent by water weekly, either by sea or through the various canals, whilst now the shipment will pro? bably not exceed 5,000 to 10,000 j tons weekly, and that contains no anthracite worth mentioning.
