THE DAILY 'Let our Juxt Censure PHONTX. Attsnd the True Event. BY J. A. SELBY. COLUMBIA, S. C., WEDNESDAY MORNING, NOVEMBER 1 1871. VOL. VII-NO. 102, ENAMBLIMO THB F?OBJ*P TS? KBsrjryr A 'iady ioEorilsvi??? 'P sbventy.fU? dollars, wa ar? told, for ibariog bar f*oe enameled for the ball gwen at the Galt House to the Grand Dav Alexis, The enamel waa warranted toUst three days, ?od HO it did. Tbe lad? waa taken ill upon har ?eium home from . the ball, ber' fuo3 became greatly Bwolleu, the most aoute pain succeeded, and it was oh ly by the employment of the best medioal skill that her lifo was saved. This statement we havo from an uu doabted source. Bat tho oaso of this lady is not so bad as that of another Louisville lady who becerra enamored of the odious fashion of enameling the face. She visited another city far to the Eastward some five month! ago for the ?ole purpose of having ber face ena? meled according to the litest Parisian mode. She had heard that a noted Parisian was engaged in tho enameling business at the city in question, and tu bim she went upon ber arrival. For the 8am of $500 he agreed to enamel her face so scientifically that' tho enamel would remain undamaged for three years, and a year or two longer if extra dare was taken in washing ibo face no cording to his prescribed method. The devotee of fashion concluded the bargain and paid $300 of the sum named, the balauoe to be paid in yearly instalments, divided into three years. The lady re? ceived the enamel, and returned to her home in thia oity. Since ber return she bas disappeared from society. There waa BO muoh poison in tho enamel that ita effects were almoBt immediately de? veloped in the almost total paralysis of the facial nerves; and, what was onoe a truly beautiful face, is to day a distort? ed, disfigured and ulcerous one. Tbe lady's beauty has disappeared forever, and if her physicians succeed in saving ber life, they will have accomplished . more than they bad a right to hope for. Her eyes are terribly inflamed and dis? figured, and the sight of them fast fail? ing.-Louisville Ledger. A OBUBII HOAX.-A London news ?iaper calls attention to SD ing?nions raud lately perpetrated io that oity. It appears that a canard bad been put into circulation to the effect that the penny pieces of 1864, issued by the British mint, by some mistake contained a large quantity of gold. The authors of this statement seemed to bave commenced operations by going about to the news? paper boys and flower girls and offering them two pence or three pence fur pennies of the above date. Tho news spread, and these boys and girls, out of their scanty earnings, began buying in? stead of selling, and the authors of the deception gradually raieod the price, and succeeded in disposing of alargo num? ber of pennies which they had beeu for some time aoonmnlatiog, at prices rang ??ing from six pen oe to a shilling. Don't let the moss gather on tho roofs of your buildings. It may be ornament? al to some eyes, but not very beneficial to shingles. They will rot ont fast enoagb by the moisture it retains; so sprinkle Borne fine' lime upon them just before a rain, and you will be surprised to see bow olean it will be taken off. It is reported that a Boston landlord refrains from collecting rent from one of bis tenants for seven years, that be might avoid payment of the income tax thereon, and that by the recent fadure of the tenant, he hhs lost the entire sum, amounting to many thousand dollars. One of Cromwell's letters is said to furnish the origin of the maxim in re? gard to the relative power of ."sword and pen." lu it there is a device of a sword crossing a pen, and underneath the legend: "Two to one the feather beats the iron." Mexico obtained an independent exist? ence io 1821, and since that time it bus had thirty-five presidents and dictators.
