"Till day-light found him woak.and wild, A?e5^rdlu0 ffl?Wr>"Car* thon npoonsr How Elephants are Educated. A Detroit poperima'thc following : . " 'Baby Annie,' exhibited on Friday and Saturday, in this city, is as popular and well, known os the majority of hu? man actors, who tread the'boards instead of the saw-dost ' ring. Like them, she endeavors to please; and in her way feels chagrin as deeply when she fails to re? ceive the approbation believed to be merited. She is now Ave years old and though far from her teens is nevertheless a pretty good lump of a budy, weighing 1,800 pounds. Her history has been carefully kept, and McLaughlin, her trainer, caa 'MW Jycm everything about ber. .. ' ' " 1 "At the .time of her capture she was only two years old; but Smith, tho cap? tor, assisted by a party Of Africans and dogs, found her aa hard to control in her infancy as most women aro nt mature age. After a few weeks training she was started for the coast, 800 miles away, and11 Kenyon has yet in his cages two large hyenas that rode in baskets slung over Miss Annie's back. Her cost in New York was $8,000, and at the time of her pu rebaso . she was tho smallest ele? phant in this country, and is still the only genuine African elephant.. Though she bas: never been hard pushed to test her e?tfatwfeoer on the road? sho onoo took .an stretch of forty-two miles over the* rooky loads of Pennsylvania, in eleven hours, and showed not the least sign of exhaustion. "Miss Annie is a model female-ono of the old school, and would os soon twist her head oft* with her trunk as to harm a human being who treated her courteous? ly. Last winter, in her quarters at Phila? delphia, she exhibited love ahn. hate in a yery singular manner. McLaughlin had imbibed rather freoly, and returning to the barn, got into a difficulty with a Sol iceni un, who was bent on arresting im. ' The cop hod been around the barn a good deal and was somewhat acquainted with tho clopbant. The trainer fled to the barn, and getting behind 'Baby,' re? fused to submit to arrest. The M. P. advanced to bring him out, when the elephant thrust him aside with her trank. This was-repeated several times, the trainer encouraging her, when the police? man gave her an angry blow with his baton, and sought to push by. Blowing her shrill trumpet, 'Baby* caught him around the waist, and giving him a strong whirl, deposited the frightened bluecpat in a barrel of oats thirty foot away. As he had no instructions to ar? rest elephats, and could not arrest the mon with her, he concluded not to press matters further. ... "At another timo, last summer, daring a hot night, McLaughlin lay down be? side 'Baby' on a bale of hay, and soon fell asleep. Near him was the cage of the Bengal tiger, a fierce and ungovern? able animal, and treacherous to tho last degree. By lying down, the beast oould get his paws at full length nuder the bars, and on the morning of that very day he had thus given his unsuspecting keeper a stroke with his claws that tore i open the man's cheek in u horrible man? ner. Restless, McLaughlin rolled about, and the eyes of the 'Boyal' glistened as he saw the body coming nearer to his cruel claws. At length, just as one of the keepers entered the door, tho trainer rolled down so near that the tiger reached out and caught his clothes. With a sa? vage snarl, he was straigtening. back for a pull, to get the flesh under his nails, when the elephant, who had also boon sleeping, arose np at the growl, and see? ing the situation at a glance, rushed for? ward, before the man at the door had scarcely advanced a step, and with a blow of her trnnk made the tiger lot go his hold and scream with pain and fury. "Sinoe her capture, she hos increased 700 pounds in weight and six inches in height. Three years ago, she had not a sign of a,tusk; now, she has ivories six inches long, and growing finely. lu tho summer, when the weather is dry, she gets a bath at every croek, and her trainer gives her a dozen pails of water over tho baok if standing long in thc tent. About twioo a year she gets six gallons of linseed oil rubbed over her skin; without it, the hide would got so dry as to feel and sound like a board. Her usual feed per day is a bushel of oats and 150 pounds of hay, and sho drinks, if moderately thirsty, twenty pails of water at a time. As stated, she is very docile, minding readily, if she understands what is wanted. Doing wrong, throagh ignorance, let her trainer 'bless her eyes' a little, and 'Baby' shows as much sorrow as a repentant in? fant. As this is ber third season, the person must be sharp who oan impose on her a worthless gift. About four weeks ago, a man gave her a stick of candy which had been soaked for some time in tobacco juice.
