Thomas Darcy McGee, in a speech, at Montreal, a short time since, said in favor of British confederation : Tho text of the Union is taken tip for us not so much by men as by events ; every thrill of the telegraphic wires gives us a reminder not to delay our Union. I speak on this subject without exaggeration when I say that in my deliberate, settled opinion, the question before all British Americans at this moment is, "Will you unite, or will you give up your country to another people, and another form of Government ?" On the other hand, the Montreal Herald, which reports tho speech, says editorially : That there can be any identity of views between the Fenians and the members of her Majesty's Canadian Government may seem at first sight a paradox almost too absurd for belief. Nevertheless, we have often pointed out that tho end of confed? eration, should it ever take place, involves as a necessity the destruction of the present connection between the mother country and thc colonies, of which most of us desire the con? tinuance. The English army is chiefly com? posed of quite young men. Of the 50,420 mon serving in the regiments at home in the year 1863, thc returns of ages are as foilows : G,01G were under twenty years of age : 19,775 were twenty, but under twenty-five ; 13,615 were twenty-five, but not thir? ty ; 6,911 were thirty, but not thirty five ; 3,280 were thirty-five, but not forty ; 823 were forty and upwards Of the recruits inspected in the same year, nearly three-fifths were under twenty, 1,003 were boys under seven? teen, 1,573 were from seventeen to eigteen, 7,7C>4 from eighteen to nine? teen. 4,697 from nineteen to twenty, 3,221 from twenty io twenty-one, 2,035 from twenty-one to twenty-two, 1.854 from twenty-two to twenty three, 2,736 from twenty-three to twenty-five, and 634 above twenty five. After twenty-four hours of trial, it was found among the debris, and on opening it this day has yielded np its contents in very good order- -books, papers, policies of insurance, bank bills, all in condition for immediate use, and a noble commentary on the trustworthiness of Herring's Fire? proof Safe Yours truly, P.
