EDITOK: The present utter pros? tration of thc South, thc result of the great revolution through which she has just passed, and the radical change in her affairs, especially in thc matter of labor, cause most persons., to look to the future with gloomy fore? bodings. They can see, as the result of emancipation, nothing but ruin j and desolat ion. Such will, doubtless, regard as the vagary of enthusiasm the declaration that emancipation is tho greatest boon tlrht could be con? ferred upon the South; yet we venturi' to predict it will prove to be so. Cotton was our kinf?. Under his iron ? rule, thc South vas becoming tho? roughly impoverished. In the culti vation of cotton, he r soil was being j rapidly exhausted. Her fairest por? tions were destined to become ulti? mately a barren waste. Slavery was the power that upheld king cotton. "With the fall of slavery, cotton tumbles from his throne. It will cease to be raised as an article of exporta- j tioiij Cotton cannot and will not be i produced to ' much extent by kimi i labor. Cuflee will not furnish the j severe and protracted . labor, through the heat ol a Southern si mmer, ne? cessary for its proper cultivation, except upon compulsion. The white man cannot. The sooner we realize this fact, the better. The v.noi.1 sys? tem of Southern agriculture must and will undergo a radical change. At? tention will be turned almost exclu? sively to the production of the cereal crops and the raising of stock. Under this new system of husbandry, our Danils will be resuscitated and restored to more than their ancient, fertility. Eoir nearly a century, we have been ?steaiuing every nerve to produce those great staples, eotton and tobacco. Untold millions of money have been ?made, with no substantial benefit to us. Nothing has been added to our wealth. South Carolina is absolutely poorer to-day than -she was a half .century ago. So with all the older ?cotton Slates, notwithstanding the millions made. Their gains havegoin.-, to swell the capital of the North.. Scarcely a dollar, comparatively, has been appropriated to enriching thc soil. Under the new system of agri? culture which must supersede the old, there will be a progressive improve? ment of the soil. In this, and in the new systems of industry which will be inaugurated under the new reginw, tho South will find lier regeneration. * As capital is produced, it will be ap? plied to the development of the natu? ral re'sources of the South, in turning; to account her unrivalled water power, and exhumingfrom the bowels of the earth tile rich treasures of gold, iron, coal and other valuable minerals which lie imbedded in the mountain region. Great manufacturing cities will spring np, furnishing a rich mar? ket to the thrifty and thriving farmer. Now that king cotton and slavery have fallen forever, the future opens up a brilliant destiny to the South. Cot ton and slavery were her evil genii. After a brief and despotic reign they have left her poor indeed, almost in the last extremity of exhaustion, p ant? ing for very hie. But now, disen? thralled by the overthrow off these cruel tyrants, she will rise to a magni? ficence of wealth and prosperity, un? dreamed of before. In a few yc-ar* the South will thank the North f< r emancipation. Tho North may or may not find that she has killed the gojuse that regi?iuly and faithfully and punctually laved lor her the golden egg. That is no concern of ours. That is their brisiuess. But from thc ashes of the goose will spring up a wiser bird who will feat?ier her air ir neat. ' Let us no longer despond and waste precious time in gloomy forebodings. Let us rather address ourselves to the accomplishment of the brilliant des? tiny that awaits the South-our be? loved South. Do not desert, your country. Just now wc are poor. But wealth and prosperity lie below us in the future and within our grasp. "We must not be impatient. Platina tente. Tho true wealtn of a country lies in the fertility of her soil.- Cotton and slavery have impoverished ours. But now we arc freed from that yoke, we can easily and rapidly restore it by au entire change of husbandry. Under the new system of ^agriculture that must take the place ol' the old, not many decades will h av.? passed, until, instead of the unsightly hroomsedge and old field pine, will be seen the orchard and the vineyard, and abund? ant harvests of thc cereal crops will reward the toil of the farmer, and alford a bountiful supply for the de? mand of tlie nianufae.turing millions of the South. In looking to thc i'utuve of tho South, we have no cause for despondency, but luther to rejoice and be exceeding glad. Tl??it future, disclosing even now lo the j view a brilliant career andu magnifi csnt destiny, will justify the exclama? tion, paradoxical as it may seem, All hail, .Emancipation! the harbinger of Souther u r?g?n?r?t iou.
