COLUMBIA.. Mon M omi ti g, Jane 26, 1865. Consolation Books. Looking about for consolation, we are sometimes counselled to the employment ol strange remedies, whether the ailment be oMhe body or the mind. Books are oi precious help to the latter in the mo? ments of doubt, brooding and anxiety; yet how variously do the tastes of men direct them in the choice of books. The Bible is undoubtedly the m?st-eommonly songht consoler. Not a few turn to Shakspeare and Milton, .seeking diversion from thought in the search of thought. Old Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress" is a won. der of a book for th? troubled mind, and Butler's "Anatomy of Melancholy" affords rare feeding for fancj* as well as thought But we never once thought of lo-king to Robinson Crusoe for more than the gi.tifi cation o' curiosity and a passsing pleasure, until happening upon ar. advertisement of the book, in a Spanish translation, by a bookseller of Madrid. He announces the volume with such a pious flourish as might provide a model for the ambitious book? seller of any country. "Robinson Crusoe," quoth he, "is a most precious book among hooks; a book of BUCU extraordinary ?vents that they are utterly unequalled; and the reading of it will be found the most diverting and instructive that can be had. And not only does it serve for the instruction and recreation of all classes of aociety, but its morality is such that the most timid person m?y read it without fear that its maxims will cause any preju? dice; and. h.deed, with the full assurance ?that he will find in it . calming power .which will give him strength to support, -with resignation the misfortunes connected with our miserable existence." THE BAILY GAZETTE.-This ?9 the title ?of a new and neat little daily newspaper, issued in Augusta by Messrs. Smith* John son rt Co. With three daily papers in that city, the people may be held amply fortified against ignorance, credulity and all the vain shows of life, society and for? tune. We not? that Dr. A. G. Mackey is one -of the Board of -Visitors for the annual examination of the cadets at West Poinb.C THE TRIAL.-The only development of importance in the assassination conspiracy trial yesterday was in relation to a draft for twenty five thousand dollars, purport? ing to have been drawn or* the Montrea, branch of the Ontario Bank, in August. 1S64-, in favor of Mr. Benjamin Wood, proprietor of the Daily Weies, of this city. Mr. D. L. Eastwood, assistant manager of said bank, testified that Jacob Thompson, the rebel agent, kept his deposits in that institution; that these moneyB accrued from the negotiation of bills of exchange drawn by the rebel Secretary of the Trea? sury on the rebel agents in Liverpool; that Thompson gave an order for twenty five thousand dollars of these deposits to be paid to Wood; that a requisition to this amount was forwarded by the Ontario Bank to the cashier ol the City Bank, New York, and that the witness understood ?that the money was pa: 1 in this city on Mr. Wood's order. Mr. T. T<Lwood also testified that the assassin ^ooth had dealt wi111 the Ontario Bank. Judge Abraham D. RusseH aud Mr. George Wilkes, ot this city, were both examined by the court in regard to Mr. Benjamin Wood's endorsement on the twenty-five thousand dollars draft referred to. They testified that they were well acquainted with Mr. Wood's hand-writing, and that they identified the signature as his. Owing to the illness of one of the mem? bers of the court, the openiug of the ar? gument by counsel for the defence, which was to have commenced yesterday, was postponed, and an adjournment till next Monday took place. [New York Herald, 1?/A. THE FENIAN FRIGHT IN ENGLAND -Not? withstanding the jolly air with which the London Times and other English journals treated our statement about the Fenians, they have taken the alarm and are evi? dently a good deal frightened. We per? ceive that a bill has been introduced in Parliament to increase the efficiency of the Irish constabulary. Any one who knows anything about that organization knows that it is about the most efficient police force in the world for purposes of coercion, as well as a detective body. It is composed of a regularly drilled army of about twelve thousand men, armed^with carbines and in every way equipped like rfbldier?. These are not alone massed in the large cities, but are scattered m small parties as well, in barracks at distances of a few miles throughout the entire country. The "efficiency" of such a foice in a small island can bc ee.sily understood. That farther "efficiency" is about to be provided by Act of Parliament, therefore, is evi? dently thc result of a Fenian fright. [Xcv Yor/c Herald. J Columbia Prioes Current. SATURDAY, June 24, 1865. WASHINGTON, June 16.-Reliable and semi-official intelligence from the city of Mexico to May 29, has been received here. Gen. Negrete occupies the StRteR of T.i maulipas, New Leen' and Coahuila. His retreat from Matamoras was forced upon him on account of a large French force sent hy Marshal Bazaine to-reinforce the garrison nnd the assistance rendered to the imperialists by Texas rebels. Michoacan is swarming with guerillas, nnd the regular troops under Regules are in excellent spirits. De Potter, the French commander, im? prisoned the wives and daughters of the lioeral Generals Arteaga, Regules, Salzar and others. Maximilian ordered their release, but, as De Potter only obei's Mar? shal Bazaine, they have not been released. In Morelia. the French punish the pa? triots with public w'nipping, and the in? habitants daily witness the horrid scenes. A large force is to he sent hy cen from Vera Cruz to Matamoras, and they intend to open Lite campaign against Negre.t.e and pi event any Americans from crossing into Mexico. The courts marii.il are hard at work. From eighty to one hundred patriots are shot daily throughout thnt portion.of the country occupied by the imperialists. Elvin's mission to France is to seek ns sistance froraJL.ouis Napoleon against the anticipated movements of Americans. Unless Napoleon will give the strongest assurances of aid in men and money to the extent required by Maximilian, he threatens to leave the country and return to Miramar. NEW ORL?ANS, Jone 10.-A fight took place ou the 2d inst, near Matamoras, be? tween Gens. Cortina and Mejia. Cortina was about twenty-five miles from the city, when Meja sent Lopez to repulse him with 2,000 men, but he was driven back by Cortina and forced to make for the Ame? rican side of the Rio Grande. The latter expected reinforcements, but did not re? ceive them. NEWBKRN, N. C.. June 12_Gov. Holden has invited tbe leading Union men of the State to meet him in council at Raleigh prior to the appearance of his proclama? tion, which is daily expected. The North Carolina papers are full of the proceedings of Union meetings, which are being held in every town in the State. All pay high tributes to the lamented Lin? coln; also to Andrew Johnson and Gov. Holden. The richest estates in the country are offered for sale in all parts of North Caro I lins, for from one to ten dollars an acre, with improvements. Their owners having decided to go North, are selling at a great sacrifice. Judge E. II. Sears, Commissioner of In? ternal Revenue, bas arrived here, and will open an office in Raleigh. An office has been opened at Beaufort by John R. French, and one at Newbern by Hiram Potter. Jr. The people pay their taxes promptly, considering the act equivalent to H. restoration of their property. President Johnson ia fast gaining the confidence of the people of the State. Gov. Holden is also disarming his enemies by his services in endeavoring to restore civil law to the State.-New York Herald. The Government, on Thursday, de? spatched 500 mei with entrenchment tools and coffins, to .e battle-fields of the Wilderness, for the purpose of decently interring the remains of all soldiers ex? posed to view, of which there are a num? ber, The'Government is now said to be feed ing 200,000 of the inhabitants of Virginia of all classes, white and black. 11,000 rations are daily issued to citizens in Rich? mond alone. Local Items. United States Treasury notes are taken ) at par for all debts due tins office. 1 GENERAL ORDERS.-Our renders will ' note with due attention the general orders issued this day from the headquarters of Gen. Hartwell. It will be seen that it requires to be well understood, in some one or other of its aeeti?ns, by all of the citizens of Columbia. FOR THE UP COUNTRY.-Messrs. Zealy, Scott ct Bruns despatch a light (covered), spring wagon, to connect with the Green? ville Railroad, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, at 6 o'clock a. m., from the front'of the Shiver House. For comfort and convenience, this line offers great in ducements to travelers. We think it well to counsel such of our citizens as scruple to receive the current money of the United States as a legal ten? der, that it is such, and that there is no good sense or policy in not recognizing it as the general currency of the country. The rejection of it will be regarded as a sign of disloyalty towards the Govern? ment. In a merely business point of view, it is the common policy to recognize, without scruple, that currency which must evidently be our only source of reliance for a long period of time. TOBACCO TRIBUTAR.-We owe to the po? lite consideration of Mr. Melvin M. Cohen and Mr. Scott, of the firm of Zealy, Scott <fe Bruns, that we can blow a cloud from the editorial fauteuil for a few days longer, without taxing the resources of the edito? rial purse. We requite them in kind with a puff-in honor of their own and the virtues of their tobacco, which we find to be .of excellent strength and of a rare Mocha nroma, such as may have rejoiced the Apician tastes of a Barmecide in the happy times of Haroun al Raschid.
