88TEC ANNUAL REPORT OF TSE NEW TORR LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY Tlie ?'Reserve Fund." Tho followi g explanation ?8 all that is requi? site for the complete understanding of the re? port by those not converaant with the subject: The '"reserve" fund of a Life Icsurauce Com? pany ia that snm in hand which, improved at a given rate of interest, will be stifflcient, together with future premiums to be paid, to meet all obligations as they beoome due. If a company has the required anni for reserve, it is solvent und can continue business; if it has not, it is insolvent and the law will interfere with its continuance. Of course the size of the reserve required depends very largely upon what rate of interest is a saunaed. The higher that rate is assumed to be, the faster tho fund will accumulate at compound interest, and hence the smaller the present sam in hand may be; the lower the rate of interest, tho more slow the accumulation, and hence the larger the re? corve required must be. Massachusetts bas adopted*, per cent, interestas the standard used for determining the required reserve; the etate of New York adopta a lower standard, nameiy ii per cent, interest. Hence tbe reserve of a company, and ita surplus, if any, as made in the official reports of the insurance depart? ments of tbe two States, do not agree; but if the ?rew York standard is safe, the Massachu? setts one muat be safer, and the New York Life therefore employe the Massachusetts one in making its own calculations, that being the highest standard used. Thus, by the Mas? sachusetts standard of interest, the reserve of the New York Life was $16,841,177 on the 1st of January. 1872, and its supine over all liabilities $1,488,134, as computed and published in the Company's regular annual report. Bat if the rate of interest to be hereafter realized is as? sumed at the N w York rate. 4$ percent., the reserve is $15.635.000 and the surplus coi a - ?uently $2 644,311. The policy of the New brk Life is, to establish and maintain perfect security above ail other things. bator? a. BIRD & CO.'S VESTAL OIL ! FOR ILLUMINATING. NO MORE EXPLOSIONS !
