[Barton Gny, in Appleton's Journal FORCE LS' LITERA TURE. [From the Saturday Review ] Ms.- Herbert Spencer maintains that the laws of every phenomenon throughout the universe including alt spiritual and intellectual as well as physical phenomena, may ba ultimately stated as corollaries from the primary laws of force. By applying tbe principle cf tne conser? vation o? forces, we discover tnat the fall of a given weight through a given distance is ?quiv? alent to the development of a given quantity of beat. In like manner we should discover that tbe same force, when converted into intellect? ual activity, will generate a given quantity of poetry or philosophy.- And, conversely, we may compare tbe merit of two literary produc? tions by determining bow much force was con? sumed in their production. If, f r example, Shakespeare's brain did an amount of work equal to ten foot-pounds in composiug the soliloquy of "Hamlet," and Goethe's did an amount equal to five of tbe same units io com? posing Mignon's song in ' Wilhelm Meister, then tbe merit of the soliloquy is precise.}- dou? ble tb it of the song. We lay no particular stress on this theory, which has, as somo peo? ple may laney, a rattier materialist sound, but it may serve as an : lustration of our proposed principle. To compare the merits of any two writers, decida which exhibits the greater amount of force, and as a rule you may safely pronounce him to bo tbe greater. Thus the quality which chiefly serves to distinguish talent from genius is originality. The man ?ho produces a new idea capable of germinat? ing in the minds o(_his readers is so far Rreater man than be who is merely the channel fer transmitting ideas already expressed by some original thinker. luis is tbe one great quality which distinguishes the few leaders of j tne world from the great; mass of dealers in second-hand opinion; and it is due simply to an excess of power. Anybody can follow a beaten track, bat to strike" out a path for your? self involves an amount both ot intellectual and moral force which falls only to the select few. Wherever it is found, we may say that its pos? sessor ia by birthright one of the immortals, though circumstances may stifle bis powers of utterance; and every one knows what a strange influence be possesses even when his remarks, though original, have been anticipated by som6vone else. A man wbo speaks from bi own mind is so far a new force, and therefore affects us in a manner essentially different from the ordinary writer, who can be consider? ed merely as tbe surface upon which external forces have impinged, in order to rebound. Within the samo class, again, it is easy to accept the theory that tbe merit of a writer is propor? tional to his vigor. Tbe difficulty begins when we endeavor to compare writings different ii species as well as in merit. There are some writ- | inga in which force shows itself, as it were, naked, and is obviously the secret of the influ? en?a which they exert over us. Such, for ex? ample, is that masculine and nervous prose of j which we have so many masters in English literature, and which sometimes looks so easy when it is really so difficult. The clear com? pressed reasoning of Hobbes, the manly com? mon sense of Locke, the incomparable energy of Swift, and the comparatively coarse dogma? tizing of Co b bott, have all a kind of family, or rather national, likeness; and, fortunately, we are not without some modern s samples of the atme style. On the other hand, the gorgeous rhetoric of Burke or Milton or Jeremy Taylor, is also good so far as it is a symptom of torce takirg a different direction. The energy which in one case displays itself by a strong trrasp of | a few leading principles, displays itself in the other by overlaying them with a vast variety of illustrations and applications. To decide which is the greater, we must wait for that new calculus of tbe future, which will enable us to estimate tbe total expenditure ot force in el th ar case. Sewing ?Hacijincs.
