The folio wi r g explanation is all that is requi? site for the complete understanding of the re? port by those not conversant with the subject The "reserve" fund of a Life Insurance Com? pany ia that sum in hand which, improved at a given rate of internet, will be sufiicient, together with future premiums to be paid, to meet all obligations aa they become due. If a . company haa the required tum for reserve, it ia solvent and can continue business; if it has noi, lt is insolvent and the law will Interfere with ita continuance. Ol course the size of the reserve required depends very largely upon what rate of interest is assumed. The higher that rate is assumed to be, the faster the fund will accumulate at compound interest, and nonce the smaller the present sum in hand may be; the lower the rate of interest, the more slow the accumulation, and henoe the larger tb' re? serve required must be. Massachusetts ..as adopted!per cent interest ap tb e standard used for determining the required reserve; the state of New York adopts a lower s ta D dard, namely 4$ per cent interest. Hence the reserve of a company, and its surplus, if any, aa made in the official reports of the inaurance depart? ments of the two States, do not agree; but if th-3 New York standard ls safe, the Massachu? setts one muat be safer, and the New York Life.therefore employs the Massachusetts one in making its- own calculations, that being the highest standard used. Thus, by the Mas? sachusetts standard of interest, the reserve of the New York Life was $16.841,177 on the 1st of January. 1872, and its supins over all liabilities $L488,1S4, AS computed and published lu the Company's regular annual report But if the rate cf interest to be hereafter realized ls as? sumed at tho N "w York rate, U per cent,, the refcerve is $15 685.000 and the surplus cor.se ?uently $2 644.811.
