The real sport ls not often afforded the citizens, and they do not enjoy lt when it 1B. We notice tbe escape SJC a tiger belonging to Forepaugh's mena? gerie, and the excitement it caused, merely to commend tbe brave act of a polios officer. The ship Sparta recently arrived at New York With four Asiatic elephants, a horoed horse, three black tigers, a mongoose, a black Suma? tran rhinoceros and other rare animale, and many curi?os birds. The rhinoceros bad just teen landed with difficulty, when a plank In the bottom of the tigers' cage broke, and one of the beasts fell through. Aa exciting Bcene then took place. The elephants, who were standing quietly in tne street, were seised with frenzy, and began a stampede. Chains were snapped asunder as If mere threads, and the animals moved away at ihe utmost speed. The tiger In the meanwhile had fastened on a horse standing in the street, had killed him, and was growling over Its repast Policeman Monroe then walked quietly up to the beast and killed lt by a shot In a vital part from his revolver. It was a brave act, and deserves a passing mention. -As ihe case of Dr. Hessel has attracted Considerable attention in England, and has - been severely commented on by the papers, We give a short account of its most salient points. A woman was found murdered In ber lodging-room in Loodoo. She was seen the night of the murder to speak to a man with a . loreign accent. Beyond ibis nothing was known, A man named Wohlebe, a passenger on ihe German snip Wangerland about to put to sea from Ramsgate, was arrested. Dr. V in. - ? 'T Hessel, the chaplain of the ship, was natui ly called upon to exert himself to aid prisoner. He hit upon the following expe ent to test the accuracy of the witnesses w were said to be able to identify Wohlebe: dressed up twenty of. the emigrants, bimi among them, and ranged them along with I accused. Here came a decidedly unpleasi complication for the charitable pastor. 1 witnesses passed by Woblebe, but Identified : Hessel as the murderer. The doctor was quired to speak English, and the ldentlfl tlon was still more positive. The emigra were all laughing, the captain was Jest] with the good doctor, Wohlebe was relea and was receiving the congratulations of friends, when the comedy became more st ous. Dr. Hessel was Informed that he v under arrest. He was sent to prison and signed to a dungeon and stripped of clothes and put in regulation uniform, a lost bis Identity as Dr. Hessel and becai j ' Number 8." He was eight days In prlst and tbe ship sailed without bim. He was tb j released; tbe English Government paid all I expenses, and bis Mends made him uj purse of six thousand dollars. The New Andromeda. It ls not necessary to barp npon t claims of the warring factions in Louislai What this paper thinks of the contend! parties stands upon the record. But th< is a question and an iBsne higher than pli forms and higher than sectional animosity the welfare of the people of Louisiana, t eupreme law of patriot and statesman. Tl demands that some measure of protect! and encouragement be given to those w so patiently bear the yoke that binds the to plough through their own hearth-stone What is the case of Louisiana to-da; How can civil government be maintain where its very form and essence are matte of hot dispute? And while each party is co vinced that it surely is "the people," ai that with that party "wisdom shall die the State lies moribund. But it is not written any Gospel or Vedas that the blind ern lead those who seel And what have v here 7 Hundreds of thousands of men, w< mea and children silently enduring the su fering entailed npon them by the strife i politicians. Their burden only changes t be increased. Chastised by whips; no they are scourged by scorpions. Even tt remedies of law, the universal refuge < oppressed souls, are in abeyance. With ui settled courts and most uncertain jndgei the only assurance the people can have ii that tbe decisions of one judge will be ri versed by the other-not always a pleasat process for tbOBe who are the first to wi their cause. With taxes at a fabulous rate and property assessed ut threefold and foui fold its vaine, at the caprice of the assessoi real estate may well go begging and fall t find a purchaser. The planter, uncertain c the futuro and without capital, is unable t carry on his operations. The merchant, re stricted in means and cautiously cortallln bis ventures, finds bis business seek othe channels. The grand railroad enterprise which promised a world of benefit to tb State, and wbicb gave employment to thone ands of hardy laborers, are at a stand still The hearts of men fail them for fear, and looking for tbe things that must corns opoi them, even the most "truly loyal" are shakei io their faith in the wisdom of a govern men which can calm ly cont?mplate such havoc-si wanton a loosing, in these days of so-caliec peace, of the dogs of horrid war. In this condition stands Louisiana; a nev Andromeda chained to the rock; her ont; garments tribulation and anguish; bount motionless by giant Selflsbnees. For the deliverance of Andromeda tb? gods sent Persens. In all Olympus, when our fumacious Jove reclines among bli thunderbolts, can no Perseas be foand, wise and bright, and pore enough, to rese?e i perishing sister ? Th? Stat? Agricultural Society. It will be remembered that, at the las! annual meeting of the State Agricultura: and Mechanical Association, it was resolved to bold the spring meeting of the Society ?JJ this city on the first Tuesday in May, and the programme of discussions for that meet? ing, published in another column, showe that the officers of the Society are alive to tbe importance of making timely arrange? ments to insure the usefulness and success of the meeting. It now remains for Charles? ton lo realize the Importance of this occa? sion, wbicb will, doubtless, bring hither hun? dreds of our best people from all sections ol tbe State, and to put forth her beet endeav? ors for the fitting reception and entertain? ment of these welcome visitors. Many of them will take advantage of this trip to purchase goods, most of them will doubtless desire to find amusement and recreation during their stay, and all of them will wish to see the metropolis of their State in her best garb and most attractive aspect It is to be hoped that the occasion will be made to attract the largest possible number or visitors, and to this end our railroads will doubtless lend their aid by some reason? able reduction of their passenger fares. The present meeting may result in the perma? nent establishment here of an annual fair which would surpass any of those now held io our sister cities; and, in this view alone, it were well that the heartiest welcome be accorded to the State Agricultural and Me? chanical Society. The Lesson, of Toleration. An able speech was lately made by Mr. B. P.. Plumly, In the Texas Legislature, on a motion to suspend the mles to pass an act of Incorpo? ration lor a Hebrew Association. It seems strange to citizens of the older States, where BOIS of Incorporations of religions societies are common, and where no one thinks ol object? ing to extending such privileges to Hebrews, that there should be any diflerence of opinion j in an American legislative body on such a sub? ject. The objection, however, to the suspen? sion of the rules by one of the members, be? cause, as he said, "I do not like Jews," bad the result ot bringing out the spirited and eloquent Bpeech relerred to, the key-note of which waa thus boldly struck in the be. ginning: "Mr. Speaker, I do like Jews. If I were not " a Christian I should be a Jew. It lo a foolish " and cruel custom to deride tbe Jews as a " Deople." Scaning from this point, tbe speak? er (alter rebuking tbe spirit of Belt-righteous, ness by the remark, among others, that "we " do nearly everything thal Christ condemned, "and we leave undone almost everything that " He required to be done,") paid an eloquent and stirring tribute to the Jewish race; the te? nacity of its life; the courage and endurance with which lt met and mastered all conditions; its existence aa a great people at a period so remote that what we call history Is lost in tra? dition; surviving the greatness of Egypt which held lt In bondage; exploring the ruins of Ba? bylon, which thousands of years ago held lt captive, where Its exiles bung tbelr harps upon the willows; having laws which have be? come the laws of the world and permeated Its civilization; girts and activities felt even now lu commerce, finance, musical and dramatic art statesmanship, literature and eloquence. " Mr. Speaker, of all people we, wno are " Christians, should not undervalue the Jews. " They were the custodians of our religious " Ideas; the progenitors of our Christian ex? emplar. In view of this subject. I realize "the feeling of Disraeli, when. In the British " Parliament, taunted wltb being a Jew, be Is " said to have replied : 'lama Jew. When "1 the gentlemen's ancestors were naked sav-1 "'ages on these Islands, mine were Princes ot i " ' ibe Temple. I feel every fibre ol my form "1 thrill with the traditions of my people.' " It is gratifying to learn that the rules of the Legislature were suspended, In conformity with the motion, by a unanimous vote, and that liberal Ideas on such subjects have ef? fectually asserted themselves in tbe "wilds of | "Texas." _ _ Th?
