Heiaeibcr?-O" the Terrace. We stood upon the castle's height, So fall of old romances: The moon above snoae clear and bright, And silvered all oar fancies. The Neckar mnrmnred In Its flow. The woods with dew were weeping, And, lighting np the depths below, .J ne quiet, town seemed tleeplng. The battlements rose grim and st ll In majesty before ns, And floating lalntly up the hill We heard a students' chorus. Inspired by the brimming cap, Their words were wildly ringing; They sang of love, and I took np The barden or their sloging. I spoke to yon; in sweet sarprlse A little while you hovered; Then la the depths or those gray eyes Toar Answer I discovered. We vowed that while the Nectar's flow (How low the word? were spokenl) Ban undisturbed these towers below, Our troth should rest unbroken. Again beneath these walls I stand, And here my fooisteps linger, Where once I pressed with loving hand \r This token on your floger. But now the well-loved view 1 see Its old enchantment misses; The evening breeze sighs back to me The shadows of our kisses. Unt ired still the Neckar flows In the soft sommer weather; Bat last years lewes and last year's vows Have flown away together. WALTER HBKRIKS POLLOCK. THE HOLIDAY TRADE. Some Interesting Conclusions of the Wholesale Dealers. [Prom the New York Bulletlu.] There ie mncb that is interesting in the de tails of this holiday traffic and which it is diffi? cult to describe. One might suppose, judging from what Santa Claus is credited with having done each Christmas season, the sales of fancy articles weald show little change in character from one year to another, but such is far from being tbe case, the trade really chancing from jaar to year in accordance witb the dictates of fashion. Contrary to tbe role in other matters, however, tbe fashion is set neither by tbe importers nor the manufac? turera, but by those who purchase from tbe retailers. Tbe season for this apparent aoom ally may be fonnd in the fact that those who have received such an article, for instance, as " T- it'jig desk as a present are not supposed to want another Out for at least three or four years, sod therefore &e^r*Uli?boaght for tb em. in tii9 succeeding years, tn>i> fiends will give them something else. It is fonnd by experience that the fashions come around to the starting point about once in five or six years so far as the articles sold are called, bat there is a constant chance in styles and quality except in certain tbing6 which he called "izap?es," and bare a very sieady sale. Among those may, curiously enough, be reckoned the old style of pocket inkstands which have held their own against au modern devices tor many years. omatAL.
