TONE OF THE STATE PRESS. ? TH* Inaugural trf Governor Mott?. [From.tnc Colombia rarolir lan. ] Like Scott, Hose? attempts, to place the re? sponsibility for the financial failure ot "free government lu South Carol!na' upon the shoulders ot the Democracy, and like Scott, too, he dwella at great length upon the terri? ble deeds of the Kn-r?ux, and speaks in term> di condescending conciliation of the misguided men who once lormed the ruling class in South Carolina. But we care not to be particularly hard upon the new Governor. . He bas enough to carry tn his past record without being laden with fresh aspersions now. lt is natural that these men should seek for apologies to excuse their past mis? deeds. Il they will only mend tbeir ways and give us something which approaches decent and honest government In South Carolina, we will forgive their former errors and consent even to allow them to ease their consciences or soothe their "pride or personal character" by blaming the "former ruling class" to some extenQfor the present miserable state of aiTalrB. Stop steailDg though. Let those two words be the motto o? the new administration. Take the money, ye men who rule lu South Caro? lina,, which the people pay into the public treasury and devote it honestly and econom 1 cally, or anything like honestly and economl cally, to the furtherance of the legitimate objects of government, and you may say pretty much anyon please, such of yon as have been associated with-the two past administra? tions, in extenuation of the many crimes against, good government and common hon? esty, which you have committed. Trie Beat Part of the Speech, [From the Columbia Pnce nix.] Governor Mosesepoke at some length. His language and style were superior to his mat ter, which was mostly of the old staple, and sounded In parts as lt It had been plagiarized from Governor Scott's farewell. The Gover? nor followed thia up with .'Sine suggestions to the men of his own race to be more tolerant to their dusky brothers, in the hush of passion and In the stilling of internecine strife, the dawn of a brighter future would be seen. Immigrants and capital would follow the bai?shjneat of ' sectionalism, Ac. While he ls in the humor ot. giving advice, and as he baa the ?ar of the colored people, lc would be well, and keep the balance even, lt he would say a. word to them against'the execrable habit they bave of burning houses, cotton; cotton gins, Ac. The Governor promised to stand npon the platform ot bis party. He re? garded lt as the authoritative exposition of Ela official doty. This.was the beat part ol his speech,- and for this we commend him hearti? ly. The oath was administered by Ohlei Jus? tice Moses, tho good book was kissed,, tho band Btruck ap Yunkee Doodle, and followed It wi th Dixie, ?nd the ceremony of mangu ra tlon was over. , . Stick to It, 1 !" [From the Marlon Star.] The good work of reform bas be?n com? menced at the very beginning of the Legisla? ture,, and. li* it la kept up during the BesBlon the members will bo entitled to and will re? ceive the "well done" of every good citizen, of the State. We shall watch the proceedings at Columbia from day to day with much Interest, and although the General assembly ls largely Republican, yet whatever of good they do we shall praise, and whatever we see to condemn we shall not hesitate to speak of lt as we think lt deserves. ; . _ . . TRIBUTE OF RESPECT. At the regular monthly meeting of the Palmetto Steam Fire Engine Company, held on Monday evening, December 2d, the following pre? amble and resolutions were unanimously adopted : Death has again visited our ranks and stricken down a brother In our midst, we are therefore caned upon to mourn the loss of our esteemed friend, Eugene A. Boye, one of the many who have endeared them serves to us by their kind, gentle and noble disposition, and by the faithful discharge of the many and dangerous duties of a , fireman* and one who- was associated with this company for many years. It ls most becoming we should place on record our esteem and arfejtloa for tia memory. And whereas, it has pleased Almighty God In His Inscrutable Providence to remove from our midst onr late brother fireman, Eugene A. Roye; be lt, therefore, Resolved. That by bis death .this company has lost the serv? oes of an active member, one who waa always ready to respond to the call of duty, ftaaght aa It often ls with danger and exposure. Resolved, That b? the deatb of our late brother. Bonne A. Baye, we recognize the hand or God, and bow with bumble submission to His wit1. Resolved, That a blank page tn our Minute Book oe dedicated to his memory, and a copy of1 these preamble and rr solutions be submitted to tn? family of tr e deceased, aad that they be pub? lished in the dally papers or the city.
