A Picture. Through heather, mos?, and golden rod. We wandered lo the summer weather; ' And. heeding scarce the way we trod, \|tere glad, because we were together. And, when the noonday sun was high, A purple rock gave shelter cool, Whertj. hidden from the summer sky, And flecked with shadows, lay a pool. ItBeemed a Jswel. bright yet dim; Wet fernB half strove to cover lt: Enticed by thyme, about the brim The wild btes murmured over lt. "And this the wishing-well," she cried. " Where t hey who drink a booD may crave;" And kneeling there, thespellshe tried; And though she smiled, her eyes were grave. Small hands together lightly pressed From the cool spring sne lifted up; And, half m earnest h >u in jest, She offered me the rosy cup. And In the pool her shadow came, A picture ne'er to be rorgot, Sweet eyes and fall ng hair, In frame Of fox-glove and forget-me-not. TJELE FIRST WOMAN INVENTOR. Massachusetts Mechanics Under a New master-The Work of a Wonderful Yankee Girl. [Corresponden ce of the New York Sun.] AMHERST, MASS., November 13. It has often been salo that there la no me ohanlcal genius in woman; but there is a rep? resentative woman near here who is endowed with remarkable mechanical genius. Her name ia Miss Martha Wright. She has In? vented a machine for manufacturing paper bags. The contrivance ls very simple, con? sisting of but little machinery, and is already pronounced an Invaluable acquisition to the paper bag making trade, which centres near Northampton, Holyoke and Ghicopee. A fortune la predicted lor the i n ven tress in a comparatively short time. The authorities at th?Tateht "Office, Washington, aay "this Is the first complete invention gotten out by a woman Miss Knight ls now superintending the mak lng of the machines, which are being manu factured at the Ames Company's works. Chlcopee. Some amusing and Interesting ac counts are given of her first visit to the works, The plans for machines had been sent on pre? viously, and preparations had been made to begin the machinery. On her arrival much curiosity was manifest? ed by the workmen regarding her. All they were aware of was that the plans bad been sent, and that they were drawn by a woman. There was not a particle of fault to be found with them; they were correct to a dot. But they were not convinced. "Probably she bad a man to tell her everything !" the workmen averred, and so they believed. On the day of her first appearance lu the shops ail tools were dropped, and the whole force of men stood facing her. Not in the least in timi dated, she met their scrutiny with a frank, honest smile, that at least won their lrlendly regard. When she went on to explain her plans, and when, wishing to illustrate more particularly her meaning, she actually stepped to one of the men's places and did herself what she wanted done, instead of asking to have lt done for her, they were not only surprised, but convinced at once of her entire capability of managing ber own affairs, and alt the em? ployees were ready to do whatever she said they were to do. 'Since that- time she has made them diurnal visits, goes down and labors with them her tell, detects mistakes and flaws with a keener eye than most men, and she has gained the admiration, respect -and friendship of every man in the large establishment. They all have a word of welcome for ber, and her visits to them are the pelasantest parts of the day. In personal appearance Miss Knight is de oldedly prepossessing. She la a tall, well developed woman, with a frank, pleasant face, very expressive, honest and fearless, with blue eyes and light brown hair, which ehe wears plain, with a coil at the back ol her bead. Her manner ls singularly simple, being entlrelyjfree from affectation, fche has a way of going straight to the point at once when ehe desires to say anything, and her mode of expression 1B decided and correct. When a friend, in a conversation, ventured to wonder some at the peculiarity of her pres? ent vocation, and could not explain how a woman should ever do anything In machinery, She sensibly said : "lt la only following out nature. I never cared for thlnga that girls usually admire; dolls never possessed any charms tor me. I could not see the sense of coddling bits of por? celain with senseless faces. The only thlnga wanted were ajaok-knife, a gimlet and pieces of wood. My friends were horrified. I was styled a Tom-boy, but that made but little dif? ference to me, and effected no impression whatever. I sighed sometimes because I was not like other girls: but wisely concluded that I could not help It, and sought further conso? lation from my tools. I was always making things for my brothers; did they want any thing In th? line of playthings they alway? said: 'Mattie will make them for us.' I was taroo tis lor my kites, and my-sleds were the envy and admiration ol all the boys In town. Pm not surp. ls ed at what I've done. Pm only sorry I could not have had as good a chance as a boy, and been put to my trade regu larly." Tet she knows as much about machinery as though she bad made lt a study all her lite. It ls a genuine gift. Miss Knigot ls a native of Boston, but was employed In one of the large paper bag manufactories near Northampton lor some time, and it was while so engaged I ( that she first conceived the creation ol a machine that would save labor in paper bag manufacturing. Several attempts have been made before to Invent something of this kind, but all haved proved unsuccessful. -An Wulgent Kansas parentsold his cook lng stove for eleven dollars in order to take bis fourteen children to the circus. He says P. only comes two or three times a year, and, besides, he never had much to cook on the stove, anyhow. I O p Stale Notices. Vi c ITLT EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT, ) COLUMBIA, S. The records of our Boston Agency have been most carefully examined by an officer of the Company, and we flL tl the number ot Policies In force on property in the burnt district to be 220, covering property to toe amount of $1,669,686; a moderate estimate for salvages will reduce the amonnt of our actual loss to $i,soo, oco, or less. . Thus, after providing for all Its liabilities, including lossea at Boston, the Company is possessed of assets of over $3, 600,000.
