The Autumn Sheaf. BT ELIZABETH, STODDARD. Still I remember early amarna days, When solden leaves were floating m the air, And reddening oaks stood sombre la the haze, ".Bil sunset struct them with tis redder glare And faded, leaving me by wood and Held, in fragrant dew, and fragrant velvet mould, To walt among the shades or n1 ght concealed, And hear that story which but once ls told. Through many seasons or the railing leave), I watched my lading hopes, and watched their fall ; In memory they are gathered now like sheaves, St? withered, that a touch would scatter alt. Dead leaves, and dust more dead, to rall apart, Leave- bending once In arches over me, And dust enclosing once a loving heart. And 1 so happy with youth's mystery. It cannot be unbound, my autumn Bhcaf Then let stand the rain or the past; Returning autumn brians the o d belier, Its mystery all its own, and lt will last. DEAR OLD DARLINGTON ! Taking * Practical: Turn-The Annual Fe lr-A Promise of a Grand Time? The Political Arena. [FROM otra OWN OORBKBFONDKNT.] DARLINGTON, October 9. Before the war Darlington was noted lor the conservatism, intelligence and high tone of Us people! The wealthy citizen, enjoying a luxu? rious and dignified ease, o? ten yielded to the allurements of literature, and ennobled his life by mental labors of no mean nor ordinary hind. HIB house waa the abode of the highest social culture, of Innocence and contentment. Even now, with his property swept away, he ls animated by the spirit of the past. It Is, therefore, not strange if the best citizens ol the ^county, unable to adapt themselves to the new order of things, and profit? ing by the humiliating defeats of the past, should abandon the field ol' politics to the party In power, and devote their ? energies to other object H. While the ne? groes and their white masters are rioting in the excesses of political debauchery, they are j quietly endeavoring to restore their private fortunes, and, in doing se, advance the mate? rial Interests of the whole county, especially that of agriculture. Their efforts in this be? half have resulted In the formation of the Dar? lington Agricultural Association. This association ls a joint stock company, with a capital of nearly four thousand dollars. Ita business, which consists chiefly In the holding of annual fairs, ls conducted by a board of directors, and a secretary and treas - nrer elected by the stockholders. A tract of over a hundred acres has beeu purchased about a mlle from the village, ten acres of which are being enclosed and titted up for the approaching lair. Two houses are in 'rapid course of construction, one measuring one hundred feet by thirty, with piazzas on three sides, and the other lotty five by thirty. The circle designed for the ex? hibition of horsos la h quarter of a mile In clr oumfetenoe, and in every way fitted for such s purpose. Large and beautiful oaks, regular? ry planted out. lu the midst of which stood.a residence cf the olden time, cover the entire grounds, while a floe bed of grass offers a pleasant and inviting couch. The fair this year wlU commence on the 30th Instant, and end on the first t>f November. It ls already exciting great interest In this and the adjoin? ing counties, and promises to be one ot the most suoce&s/ol ever held In the State. The Wilmington, Colombia and Augusta and North? eastern Railroads have generously agreed to pass persons attending the lair for half price. The latter road will onarge bnt half price for articles designed for the exhibition. Cardoso, JUlson and Lee. of Sumter, pot In an appearance here yesterday, and had what they termed a Joint discussion. The Regulars, however, had everything their own way. Jllieon. who Imagines himself an exceedingly funny fellow, undertook to show wny Greeley shouldn't be elected. He told a good many anecdotes, which muet have been amusing, atnoe ho laughed heartily at them himself, although the audience couldn't always see the point. Lee, who represented tbe Bolters, was the next speaker. As he proceeded in bis j apeeoh. he became ludicrously tragical. He jose, he said, to make a special attack on Moses and Cardozo, but somehow or other the attack : waa. not made. He was evidently afraid ol the latter, who was present. Cardozo, in bia speech, scorned everybody ?iud everything. For the speaker wbo had Jost taken'his seat, be had the most unspeak? able contempt. Notwithstanding his Intolera? ble presumption, he made the best speech of | the evening. Judge Townsend ls holding bis first court in Darlington. The session, as has been the Ote?bate ever since the war, will be occupied pritftrpally with criminal business. His honor, however, will give us three or four week s of extra court In December, which it ls h oped wu! clear the dockets. BOZTXA. IT "tl TT - - ? JOTTINGS ABOUT TUR STATE.
