The Everman ls now on the way, and loads back to Philadelphia Immedi? ately, and shippers will do well to secure plight room. THE CITADEL SQUARE CHURCH. Call of a New Pastor-A Sketch of HU Career? The congregation of the Citadel Square Baptist Church in this city have Invited the Rev. J. A. Chambllsa, late pastor of the Sec? ond Baptist Church of Richmond, Va., to take charge of their church. Mr. Chambllss was elected pastor about a month ago, but the call was not formally extended until last Wednes? day evening. His parents are South Caroli? nians, but he is a native ot the State of Ala? bama, and about thirty-three years old. His collegiate studies -.vere pursued at George? town College, Kentucky, where he graduated with honor. A short time alter hts gradua? tion, he conceived the Idea of studying theo? logy, and, with that view, entered the South? ern Baptist Theological Seminary, at Green? ville, South Carolina. In the year 1860, be completed bis course of studies, and lett the Institution with renewed honors. During the same year, he married a Miss Mauldln, of I Greenville, and assumed charge ot the Baptist j Church at Sumter, 8. C., which charge he re? tained until the latter part of 1861, when he resigned it lor service tn the Confederate army. At the close ot the war he accepted the call ol a small church near Ninety-six, in Newberry County. In 1866 he resigned this for the Baptist Church at Aiken, where be re? mained one year, and at the same time kept a school. In 1867 he received and accepted the call ol tho Second Baptist Church of Bich mond, Va., which he kept until a short time ago. He is represented as an able man and an eloquent preaoher. Besides the call from this city he has recently received two others; one from Kansas City and another irom the South Baptist Church of New York City. The call from Kansas City he has already refused, and his friends In this city are quite hopeful that | he will also refuse that irom New York In favor of the one fiom this city. THE MEDICAL COLLEGE. The Medical College of the State of South Carolina ls one of the oldest schools In this country, and has enjoyed a reputation sur? passed by no other institution. Before the war ber students were numbered by hun? dreds, and her balls were filled with represen? tatives irom every Southern State. From New Tork to San Francisco her sons are found fill? ing high and responsible positions; and in the long list of ber alumni she knows of none who have disgraced her diploma. The ability and energy of uer fac? ulty bad placed ber in the proud position of the first medical college of the South. The faculty knowing tbe pecuniary difficulty at this time In tbe wny of many a worthy young man who would ccmmence the study of medi? cine, have, after the most mature and serious consideration, determined to oner to medical students daring the coming session a complete course of lectures free ol charge. This step has been taken after the most anxious and earnest deliberation, and they wish lt distinct-1 ly understood that they do not Intend, In the slightest degree, to lower the standard of medical education, or render still easier the already too great facility by which diplomas are obtained. The course of lectures will begin on the 15th instant. PRESENTATION.-Captain W. H. Gannon and Engineer Mouaseau, of the steamer Pocosln, ?vere made the recipients, yesterday, of a landsome testimonial ol regard Irom the resl-1 lents of Sullivan's Island. Captain Gannon was presented with a solid gold chain and a J locket attached, and Engineer Mousseau with t set of gold Btuds and sleeve-buttons. The articles were purchased at the Jewelry store of Messrs. Thomas & Lanneau. A COURT IN A BAD ?IX. WASHINGTON, October 3. Congress at its last session established United States Court lor the Western District I sf North Carolina, but failed tc ?cake any pro fisi?n for the appointment of a United States marshal. There could be no court without i marshal, and the marshal of the Eastern Dis? trict could not act because his Jurisdiction Is limited to the counties not embraced tn the Western District. No grand or petit Jury could be summoned without a marshal, and no money could be drawn from the treasury to pay the expenses of the court In the absence of snob an ofilcer. To meet the un? expected emergency, Marshal Carrow ls ap-j pointed a disbursing agent ol the department of Justice, and under the appointment baa Irawn from the treasury twenty thousand lollara to pay the expenses ol the court.
